I am looking for an automatic car (not an AMT, DSG, or DCT). My budget is around Rs. 10-12 lakh. The car will primarily be used for city driving and should also offer good fuel efficiency. I have shortlisted Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Sportz Option IVT, Honda Amaze VX CVT, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXi AT. I am inclined towards the Brezza, but there is no clarity on when the facelift will be launched. Please suggest what I should do.

Of your shortlisted cars, the Honda Amaze CVT feels like the best fit. It has a spacious interior, it's excellent on mileage and is compact and easy enough to drive around town. And instead of the VX model you have suggested, you can easily get the top-end ZX well within your budget.

Did you mean the Hyundai i20 Sportz (O) IVT? The Grand i10 Nios uses an AMT, which is one of the gearboxes you have ruled out. The i20 is a great option, and in your budget you can even move up to the higher-spec Asta (O) IVT variant. It's nice to drive and has a premium interior, but is not as spacious, practical or fuel efficient as the Honda Amaze CVT.

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT, while a more spacious and powerful option, is not available in your budget, and even the lower spec VXI AT will exceed it. The facelifted version is expected to launch soon, and you can expect prices to go up further. If you are willing to extend your budget, it might be worth checking out.

Another option you can consider is, the Nissan Magnite Kuro 1.0 Turbo CVT. It's spacious, smooth, loaded with features and comes with a punchy turbo-petrol that is more powerful than the Amaze or i20, and has more torque than the Brezza. It is a great value-for-money option, but bear in mind, Nissan's service network is not as wide as the others'.

Hi Autocar, I'm planning to buy my first automatic car with an on-road budget of around Rs. 12 lakh, and I'm a bit confused between these options: Honda Amaze ZX CVT, Tata Punch Accomplished+ S AMT, Skoda Kylaq Signature AT The car will mostly be used for a mix of city driving and occasional highway trips. A few things about my usage: I'm a first-time driver, so I want something easy to drive, and that helps me build confidence. Right now, the car will be used occasionally, but the usage could increase over the next few years. My parents will also be driving it sometimes, so ease of driving and comfort are important. I'm looking for a reliable car that doesn't give frequent issues and is easy to own. Which of these would you recommend based on my requirements? Also, if I go with the Kylaq, is the Signature+ AT really worth paying around Rs. 2 lakh more than the Signature AT? Are the extra features and overall package worth the premium, or is the Signature AT good enough? Thanks!

Between your picks, the Skoda Kylaq and Honda Amaze are the best bets for your needs. The Amaze CVT is smooth, the car is compact and easy to manoeuvre, and Honda’s reliability and low maintenance costs make it a stress-free ownership experience. It is also a proper automatic gearbox, unlike the AMT in the Punch, which can feel jerky at low speeds. The Kylaq is more fun to drive and has the most premium feeling of the three. The 1.0 TSI engine also offers the most performance, which will be handy on the highway, but will also consume more fuel in the city. Its torque converter automatic is very smooth shifting and makes driving in the city very easy. What also helps is that you sit higher than the Amaze, which will give you a bit more confidence in tight city traffic. The downside is that Skoda’s service network is not as widespread as Honda’s, and upkeep can cost more. As for the variant, the Signature+ AT adds a couple of useful features like a reversing camera and a larger infotainment screen, but it is not worth paying Rs 2 lakh extra over the Signature AT. Between these two, the Amaze ZX CVT is the better fit for your requirements - easy to drive, reliable, comfortable and hassle-free to own.

I am currently driving a 2017 Renault Kwid 800cc manual. I have noticed a nagging pain in my right knee every time I drive. I mostly drive in stop-and-go traffic. Could the clutch be the reason for it? I am also looking to upgrade to either the Kia Seltos IVT or the new Maruti Suzuki Brezza. My budget is Rs. 15-20 lakh. Will a higher seating position and a clutchless automatic transmission help reduce my knee pain? I am not very tall. Which would be the better car for my needs?

Yes, the clutch could well be a contributing factor to your knee pain, especially in stop-and-go traffic. As a car ages, the clutch can become heavier, and considering your Renault Kwid is almost a decade old, repeated use in traffic can put strain on the knee over time. Moving to an automatic will make a significant difference, as it eliminates the constant clutch operation and allows you to focus on braking and accelerating with your right foot only.Between the Kia Seltos IVT and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, the Seltos IVT would be the better choice for your needs. The IVT gearbox of the Kia car is smooth and effortless in traffic, and the higher seating position, wider cabin and more supportive seats will help with comfort on longer drives. The Brezza is a solid, reliable car, but the Seltos feels like a more substantial upgrade from the Kwid and will be more comfortable over the long term.Do keep in mind that while a higher seating position can help with visibility and comfort, the key benefit here is the automatic transmission. If you are not too tall, make sure you adjust the seat height and distance from the pedals so that your knee remains slightly bent when pressing the brake pedal fully. This will help reduce strain.Overall, the Seltos IVT is the better fit for your needs. It will make your daily commute far more comfortable and should help alleviate the knee pain you are experiencing.
