I live in Navi Mumbai and am looking for an electric car. I've shortlisted the Tata Sierra Adventure 75kWh (around Rs 23 lakh) and the MG Windsor Essence Pro (around Rs 20 lakh). I'm not able to decide which one to go with.

Go for the Tata Sierra EV 75kWh. It's the superior EV in almost every way. It's got a significantly larger battery, so even if it isn't quite as efficient as the MG Windsor Essence Pro, the overall real-world range will be better. Though the Windsor is spacious, the Sierra is even more so, with a much larger boot. It's more powerful with a rear-wheel-drive layout and more fun to drive as well. Tata's service network is also wider than MG's, so you are more likely to find something closer to you.

The only things that could swing it in favour of the MG car are the fact that it is slightly smaller and thus easier to manoeuvre around town, and the Rs 3 lakh price difference. However, we feel in this case the Sierra EV 75kWh is worth the stretch, and that you should go for it

Hello Autocar, I'm planning to buy an EV with a budget of around Rs. 20-22 lakh (ex-showroom). Although I can stretch it a bit if it's worth it. The models that I'm currently considering are Tata Sierra Adventure 75, Tata Harrier EV Adventure 65 and Mahindra XEV 9e 59 kWh (base variant). My usage will be around 70% city driving. I also own a 2025 Hyundai Creta Petrol CVT, so I'm looking for an EV that genuinely feels like an upgrade rather than just a different powertrain. Among these, I liked the XEV 9e the most, but I'm a bit concerned about the long-term practicality and battery life of the 59 kWh pack, since it's the smallest battery among the three. Which one would you recommend, and is there any other EV in this price range that I should consider?

Go for the Mahindra XEV 9e 59 kWh. It is the most complete electric car from the ones you're considering and will genuinely feel like an upgrade over your Creta. The Sierra and Harrier EV are good cars, but the XEV 9e feels more premium, more modern and more sorted as an overall package. Going for the smaller 59 kWh battery should not be a concern since it is still a large pack, and Mahindra’s battery management system is well engineered. The car is also more efficient than the Tata EVs, so real-world range is not as far behind as the numbers would suggest. The only reason to stretch to the larger battery is if you regularly do very long highway runs. For your 70% city usage, the 59 kWh pack is more than sufficient. The Sierra EV is the better Tata EV, but the XEV 9e is the better car overall.

Sir, I am planning to buy the top variant of either the Tata Sierra EV (Empowered A) or the Kia Syros EV (X-Line). I have bookings for both. The Sierra costs me Rs 24.79 lakh, which is about Rs 5 lakh more than the Kia. I do not mind paying more for the Sierra because it gives me a bigger car and more features. But the irritant is their insistence that I should pay an additional Rs 49,000 for the 7.2kW AC fast charger. And it has no BaaS option either. What is your considered advice?

The Tata Sierra EV is a genuinely impressive product with a spacious cabin, strong feature list and a premium feel. The Rs 49,000 charge for the 7.2kW AC charger on the Sierra EV is an irritant, but look at the bigger picture; you are getting a much larger, more powerful car than the Syros EV, with a bigger battery and healthier range too.Sure, the Syros EV is an excellent option and benefits from Kia's more predictable, fuss-free ownership experience. However, if you have your heart set on the Sierra EV and don't mind paying the Rs 5 lakh premium, we'd suggest you follow your heart.

I am currently using a 2024 VW Virtus 1.5 GT (electric seats variant) and have completed 16,000 km. My current monthly running is around 1,000 km, mostly in the city. Should I continue with this car or switch to an EV? My Virtus has an online resale value of around Rs. 14 lakh, and I do not want to spend more than Rs. 3-4 lakh over its resale value. Please suggest whether I should buy an EV within this budget or continue with the Virtus.

If you enjoy driving, we'd recommend you stick with your Volkswagen Virtus 1.5 GT. At 16,000km and a 1,000km/month usage pattern, mostly in the city, the car is still relatively new and well within its prime ownership window. The 1.5 TSI is a strong, efficient engine and the Virtus is a genuinely enjoyable car to drive, especially in urban conditions where its size and performance are well suited. Your budget of Rs 14 lakh resale plus Rs 3-4 lakh extra puts you in the Rs 17-18 lakh range, which limits your electric car options to models like the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, MG Windsor and Kia Syros EV. While these are competent cars, they will not feel like a meaningful upgrade over the Virtus in terms of overall ownership experience. The financial case for switching to an EV at this stage is also weak given the depreciation hit you would take on a nearly new car. Unless you have a strong desire to go electric, it makes more sense to continue with the Virtus for a few more years and revisit the EV decision when your usage pattern or the EV market justifies it.

With a yearly running of just 6,000km, petrol is the sensible choice, and the Hyundai Alcazar is a good option. It is a comfortable, easy-to-drive family SUV with a hassle-free ownership experience, and the 1.5 turbo petrol engine paired with the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic is powerful enough and relatively efficient too. Plus, since you're coming from a Creta, you'll be familiar with the Hyundai network and could even ask for a loyalty discount. However, the Alcazar’s third row is not as spacious as some larger cars in the segment, so if you genuinely need a proper 7-seater, it may not be the ideal solution. What's more, if your Creta is the 2020 or newer model, you'll find the Alcazar perhaps a little too familiar on the inside.The Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus are good options that offer more space. However, as you have noted, they're not fuel efficient at all, and moreover, in your budget, you will only get a low to mid-spec variant, whereas you will get a fully-loaded Alcazar. Another option to consider, though not an SUV, is the Kia Carens Clavis. Its MPV shape is more space-efficient, and you actually get more passenger and luggage room than the Alcazar, with the same efficient engines, for around the same price.
