In only its second race in Formula E, Citroen has clinched its first race win in the all-electric world championship. Nick Cassidy executed a perfect Attack Mode strategy to gain 12 places and win the Mexico City E-Prix, ahead of Mahindra Racing’s Edoardo Mortara and Nissan’s Oliver Rowland.

  2. Reigning champion Rowland on podium

After starting from P13 on the grid, Cassidy spent the first half of the race still outside the top 10. But he timed his Attack Mode deployment just right, taking it right after the Safety Car period (brought out by Nyck de Vries stopping on track) to take the lead.

Behind him, Mortara still had two more minutes of Attack Mode to use. But Cassidy fended him off to secure his fourth win in five races. This also hands Citroen its very first Formula E race win; the carmaker has taken over sister Stellantis brand Maserati’s entry in the all-electric championship.

“I didn’t think until the last lap that we were okay,” Cassidy said. “I was happy with the P4 today, starting P13, my radio was very much like ‘let’s secure a good result’ but my engineer has always been making the right calls. This one is very much for him as it is for me and the whole team. It’s the team, the car, the package and the strategy that enabled us to win that race - you can’t win this race with a bad car.”

It was a race of mixed fortunes for Mahindra. While Moratara took to the chequered flag in second place, his teammate de Vries was forced to retire due to a mechanical issue. After the first two rounds, the Indian team is fifth in the standings, 15 points behind Nissan and Porsche.

“We have learned that the car is competitive and capable of delivering strong qualifying performances, winning duels, and fighting at the front and that pace is genuinely strong, even on circuits that have historically been challenging, such as São Paulo and Mexico, with clear podium potential,” said Mahindra Racing CEO and team principal Frederic Bertrand.

Reigning Formula E world champion Rowland completed the podium in third place. Andretti’s Jake Dennis ran out of energy on the run to the finish line and dropped to P5, behind DS Penske’s Taylor Barnard. Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein ended up P6, followed by Cupra Kiro’s Josep Maria Marti, who overcame several penalties to score his first points in Formula E.

Citroen’s Jean-Eric Vergne, Porsche’s Nico Mueller and Nissan’s Norman Nato completed the top 10.

After the first two races, Cassidy currently leads the drivers’ championship by four points from Dennis. Rowland is third overall, just two points behind Dennis.

Formula E will now head to Miami for Round 3 on January 31.
