My budget is around ₹10.5 lakh (± ₹50,000). My monthly running is approximately 400 km, and I prefer a petrol car with a city mileage of around 11-14 km/l. I have analysed the Mahindra XUV 3XO, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, and Toyota Taisor. I am also expecting good resale value. Please suggest the best option.

Of your shortlisted cars, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx (or its equivalent, the Toyota Taisor) makes the most sense. In your budget of Rs 10-11 lakh, you get a choice of a 1.2-litre petrol engine or a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

While the 1.2 is more than sufficient, we would recommend the Turbo for its additional pep, with little penalty to mileage and running costs. Unless driven with an overly heavy foot, it should easily meet your target of 11-14kpl. Maruti vehicles are also great when it comes to resale value, with some of the best long-term residual values on the market.

The next best bet is the Hyundai Venue, which is more spacious and comfortable, but it won't be as good as the Maruti when it comes to mileage or resale value.

I want to purchase a car for travelling to my hometown, which would be around 650km plus journey, 2-3 times a year. Looking for a comfortable rear seat where my mother can rest during the journey. Budget 8-10lakh, max. I am considering the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor. Please advise, thank you.

For your requirement of comfortable long-distance travel with a focus on rear seat comfort, we would suggest going for the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor in the S Plus variant.
The biggest advantage of the Taisor is its slightly higher stance as compared to similarly sized hatchbacks, which makes getting in and out easier, especially for elderly passengers. This becomes very important on long journeys with multiple stops. It also offers a comfortable rear seat with good support, which will help your mother stay relaxed over a 600+ km drive.
In terms of ride quality, the Taisor is actually quite well sorted. It is equipped with a comfortable suspension setup that handles bad roads and undulations well, and feels stable and composed on highways, making it suitable for long-distance travel. This balance works well for your kind of usage, where you will be covering long distances but also encounter varying road conditions.

I am planning to buy a new car and am currently waiting for the new Honda WR-V to be launched. Could you please advise on its expected launch timeline? Also, if there are any good alternatives to the WR-V that meet my requirements, kindly suggest them. My key requirements are: A responsive automatic gearbox Comfortable seats and good ride quality for long drives Good ground clearance Decent mileage

Honda has no plans to launch the WR-V in India, at least not in its current avatar. If a new sub-four-metre SUV is launched, it won't be before 2029, with several other products planned before then, such as the 0 Alpha EV, a new Honda City, a new 7-seat SUV and a new Elevate, as well as some CBUs.

Until then, check out the Maruti Suzuki Fronx (or its sibling, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor), specifically with the 1.0 Boosterjet turbo petrol engine and 6-speed AT gearbox. This powertrain delivers, at once, performance, smoothness and efficiency, giving the best of all worlds.

The Fronx is a sharp-looking compact crossover that's surprisingly practical and well equipped. It's got good ground clearance and a comfortable ride, and space is more than enough too. Plus, being a Maruti, running costs are low, and reliability is rock solid.

Hello, I am planning to purchase an automatic car purely for city use, with a daily running of roughly 20 km. I currently own a Maruti Suzuki Celerio AMT, which is now 10 years old, and that is the primary reason for this upgrade. My priorities are easy ingress and egress for seniors, comfort, and strong AC performance. My budget is around ₹10 lakh, which can stretch up to ₹12 lakh. I am considering the Taisor S Plus AMT, Kylaq Signature AT, Sonet HTK(O) DCT, XUV 3XO MX2 Pro AT, and Venue HX5 DCT. Could you please advise which would be the best choice for my requirements?

Among your choices, the Mahindra XUV 3XO MX2 Pro AT is a good fit for your needs. For 20km/day city use, the torque-converter automatic is smoother than the AMT in the Taisor and the DCTs in the Venue and Sonet. It is also more spacious than the Skoda Kylaq, and its tall stance makes it easier to get in and out of than the Taisor. The ride is smooth over speed breakers and potholes, and the AC cools quickly in summer.

Before you make your final decision, visit the dealerships along with the seniors in your family to see which one they find most comfortable.

Within a budget of around ₹12 lakh (could extend some), I want to buy a petrol manual car which is fun to drive, reliable and will not be so heavy on my pocket for fueling and maintenance. My monthly usage is around 400km, mostly city and occasional road trips. Which car will you suggest?

You can consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor in their top turbo petrol manual variants. The engine, despite being turbocharged, has hardly any turbo lag and offers good punch. It also comes with a light clutch and a slick gearbox, which makes it easy to drive in the city. Even on an open road or around a ghat section, both these cars are surprisingly fun to drive, and over bad roads, the suspension delivers a comfortable ride as well. For a turbo petrol engine, efficiency is also quite impressive. Overall, there is actually not much to fault here.
If you want something that feels a bit more premium, you can look at the Skoda Kylaq, the Signature+ MT variant. The Kylaq is a fun car to drive, but the clutch is heavier, and you will feel more turbo lag. It will also not be as efficient as the Fronx turbo petrol, and the peace of mind ownership experience may not be as strong.

My daily driving is around 20 km in a small city and nearby villages, and my budget is Rs 12-14 lakh. I prefer a car with a powerful engine. Which car would you recommend?

There are a couple of options that you can consider. We've listed the highlights for each.

1) Skoda Kylaq: Punchy engine, fun handling. Rear seat space is tight, though

2) Mahindra XUV 3XO petrol: Strong engine, good ride comfort. Boot space is limited

3) Maruti Suzuki Fronx Turbo/ Toyota Taisor Turbo: Strong engine. Reliability and hassle-free ownership experience

4) Citroen C3: Strong engine. Feels a bit basic, and the service network isn't very large.

I am looking to buy a petrol automatic car under ₹12 lakh, primarily for city driving. My main priorities are good mileage, ease of driving, and overall affordability. Could you please suggest the best options available in this budget?

While there are quite a few petrol automatic options within your Rs 12 lakh budget, the most fuel-efficient options include the
Maruti Suzuki Baleno AMT (and its twin the Toyota Glanza), Maruti Suzuki Dzire AMT, Maruti Suzuki Swift AMT, Maruti Suzuki Fronx AMT (and its twin the Toyota Taisor).

All feature AMT gearbox options. While AMTs aren't the most sophisticated or smoothest type of automatic transmission, they are fine for average city driving. What sets AMTs apart from other automatics is real-world fuel economy, which is on par and sometimes even better than a comparable manual's.

Of the above options, we'd choose between the Baleno, Glanza, Fronx and Taisor. Their larger 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine makes them feel a bit zippier than the Swift and Dzire that use 1.2-litre three-cylinder units.

Hi, I’m using a Ford EcoSport AT petrol. I’m very happy with the car’s build quality, handling, and performance, but I’m concerned about the mileage. In Bangalore city, I get about 8 km/l, and on the highway it’s about 14 km/l. I want to upgrade to a similar SUV with greater mileage (over 20 km/l), good safety, and durability, costing between ₹10 L and ₹15 L on-road. Please suggest suitable options.

Unfortunately, there's no petrol automatic compact SUV today that will achieve anywhere near 20kpl in the real world, in the city or on the highway. The most efficient petrol compact SUVs are the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor

If you want something more spacious, consider the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, though it is slightly less efficient. If you want more efficiency still, though, consider a diesel compact SUV like the Hyundai Venue or Kia Sonet. They are the smoothest and most efficient in the segment, and are more likely to get close to or surpass 20kpl.

Hi, I am planning to buy my first automatic car. It will be used mostly within Bangalore city, and occasionally, I will drive to my native place. Could you please suggest a good family car within a budget of Rs 10 lakh?

As your first car, we recommend the Hyundai i20 petrol-IVT for its smooth and refined powertrain. The interiors feel upmarket, and it is spacious and comfortable too. The Hyundai i20 Sportz IVT variant should fall within your budget, and despite being a mid-variant, it covers the basics well.
If you want a crossover-like option, you could opt for the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor with the 1.2 petrol-AMT combination. Do keep in mind that it is likely to be more fuel-efficient than the Hyundai; the drive experience won't be as smooth or seamless.

Hi Autocar, I currently own a Tata Indica V2, which is now 19 years old, and I am planning to upgrade. I am looking for an SUV with an automatic gearbox within a budget of ₹17 lakh. My mother and I like the Mahindra XUV 3XO for its performance, safety, and features, while my father prefers the Toyota Taisor for its mileage. Could you suggest the best car for our needs within this budget? Also, as a family, we really like the Renault Duster. Considering that the new Duster has just been launched, would it be a better idea to wait for it instead of buying a car right now?

While the other cars you have listed are indeed capable for the reasons you have listed, if you all agree on the new Renault Duster, then you should go for it. The SUV has just been launched for Rs 10.49 lakh to Rs 18.49 lakh (ex-showroom), though the petrol automatic option you are interested in starts at Rs 14.49 lakh.

In your budget, you should be able to get the upper-mid Techno+ variant with the 1.3 turbo-DCT powertrain. While we haven't driven the new Duster yet, signs point to it being a good middle ground between performance and mileage, and it's expected to, as before, have excellent ride comfort.

It's also got that boxy shape that made the original so popular, and it's quite well equipped too, although the rear seat isn't as spacious as we had hoped. Bookings are open for the new Duster, with deliveries starting in April. But if you really don't mind waiting, the strong hybrid version is expected by Diwali, which should easily surpass the Toyota Taisor on mileage.
