With 10,000 km a year plus quarterly 500 km highway runs, a petrol automatic is the right choice. Your priorities are fuel efficiency first, then space, then power. That points you towards a hybrid, because it will give you the best fuel economy in city driving without sacrificing performance on the highway.The Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid is the best fit. It is a full hybrid, so it delivers excellent fuel efficiency in city conditions, and the petrol engine is strong enough for highway driving. It is also spacious enough for a family, and the hybrid system keeps running costs low over time. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid is mechanically identical, but the Victoris has a slightly more premium interior and a better feature list at a similar price. However, the boot space in both cars is small as the hybrid battery eats into it. If you need a 7 seater, the Kia Carens is the better option. It is spacious, comfortable and well equipped, but it will not match the Victoris Hybrid for fuel efficiency.Go for the Victoris Hybrid if fuel economy is your top priority. Choose the Carens only if you genuinely need seven seats.

Go for the Toyota Innova HyCross non-hybrid. Your priorities are space, comfort and a good engine, and the HyCross delivers on all three. It is one of the most spacious cars in the segment, with a genuinely usable third row and a comfortable ride that makes it an excellent family car. The petrol engine is smooth, refined and well suited to your running of under 1,000 km a month, where the hybrid premium is harder to justify.The Mahindra XUV 7XO is a strong alternative with a more powerful engine and a more feature-rich cabin, but the HyCross has the edge on space, comfort and long-term ownership experience.The Hyundai Alcazar and Kia Seltos are good cars, but they do not offer the same level of space or comfort, and the Renault Duster is more of a driver's car than a family car. The Toyota car mentioned above is the car you will be happiest with after five years of ownership.

With your low monthly running and long-term ownership plan, petrol is the right choice. The Honda Elevate is the best fit here. It offers a spacious cabin with good rear legroom, a comfortable ride and Honda’s reputation for long-term reliability. The naturally aspirated petrol engine is smooth and easy to live with, and the car is well suited to both city driving and occasional long trips. The Hyundai Creta is also a strong option with a more premium cabin and a slightly more comfortable ride, but the Elevate offers a bit more performance for highway use. The Skoda Kushaq is the driver’s car of the lot, but it is not as spacious as the rest. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrid is a good, no-nonsense altenative. Go for the Elevate petrol CVT if you want an automatic, or the manual if you prefer to drive. It is the car you are most likely to be happy with after 10 years.

The Clavis wasn’t part of your shortlist, but with seven members in the family, it is worth adding to the list. It makes more sense than the Seltos or Hyryder because you get a genuinely usable third row without making a major compromise on your budget, as it is around the same price. It also suits your very low running costs better than a hybrid, while offering easy city driving and relatively low running and maintenance costs.If you specifically want an SUV, the Mahindra XUV 7XO would be the next option. It offers stronger performance, a more substantial SUV feel and better highway ability, although it is larger and will cost more to run.The Seltos and Hyryder remain good five-seaters, but with seven people in the family, the third row will eventually become a requirement rather than a luxury.

You already have different cars for different purposes, but you haven't mentioned which of the four cars you would like to replace. Within Rs 40 lakhs, the Toyota Innova Hycross hybrid is an excellent, tried and tested option. It is efficient, extremely spacious, and the ride comfort is good too. Also, with light steering, a responsive powertrain and good visibility and driving aids, it is very user-friendly. So unlike the Innova Crysta, which would be more suited for the chauffeur-driven, the Hycross is also surprisingly easy to drive too.You could also consider the new Kia Sorento, which seems excellent value for money. We haven't got a chance to drive or test it yet, however it seems spacious, well-equipped and on first impression, the interior quality seems to be excellent. This is one SUV you must test drive before finalising - it has both 2.2 diesel and 1.6 turbo strong hybrid options.
