I want to upgrade to a seven-seater, but I am confused between a new Triber or Ertiga, and a used XL6. My usage is mostly in the city with occasional highway trips. My priorities are low maintenance and good mileage. Please suggest. Also, I would like to know what good automatic car options are available under Rs 8 to 9 lakh. Thank you.

The Maruti Suzuki XL6 is a more premium version of the Ertiga, and it is based on the same platform. However, the XL6 is a 6-seater, thus consider between the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga or the Renault Triber, both of which are 7-seaters.The Renault Triber is a sub-4m MPV, though, so while it is more affordable, it is smaller than the Ertiga, and the 1.0 litre engine is not powerful, especially so when fully loaded. As for your query about a good automatic car under Rs 9 lakh, you can consider the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, or if you would like an SUV body style, the Nissan Magnite would be a good choice.

Confused between Dzire and Triber. I’m a first-time car buyer and will occasionally travel with 4 adults and 2 kids. I like the Triber’s space and seating, but am concerned about its 1-litre engine and fuel efficiency with AMT. Another option is the Dzire. How does the Dzire’s engine compare with the Triber’s? Which car should I consider?

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire has a better engine and smoother gearbox. However, since you will travel with up to 6 passengers, the Dzire is not recommended for you. The three-row Renault Triber offers seating for up to 7 and is the one to buy. Yes, its 1-litre engine can feel sluggish with a full load, but performance should be given less priority than the safety of dedicated seating for all passengers.

I actually do not want an Ertiga, XL6, or Kia Carens. I am looking for something a bit different with better road presence and a more premium comfort feel. Can you suggest some good used 6-7 seater options in the Rs 7-12 lakh range? Also, considering that my usage is mostly city driving with occasional highway trips and not very high running, should I go for a petrol or diesel car? Which option would make more sense in terms of maintenance, reliability, fuel efficiency, and long-term ownership?

In that price bracket, your other 6-7-seater options are Renault Triber and Nissan Gravite. These offerings are surprisingly spacious and practical, and since your usage is limited to the city, they will feel very user-friendly, with their light controls and relatively compact dimensions.Alternatively, you could consider a Citroen Aircross. Being a rare sight on our roads and having proper SUV credentials, it delivers in terms of road presence. However, its third row is not as spacious as other seven-seaters listed, and you will have to stretch your budget by a few lakhs to get this, since the seven-seater is available with the more powerful turbo-petrol engine.Taking all things into consideration, we'd urge you to reconsider and opt for the 1.5 petrol Kia Carens or Maruti Ertiga if you want a comfortable seven-seater.

I want to purchase a small SUV with a width similar to the WagonR. Also, it should have great mileage, good safety ratings, and the largest boot space possible. Which one would be best for me?

Without knowing your budget, it's hard to pinpoint what exactly you're looking for in a car. However, going by your request and assuming you want an upgrade from a Maruti Wagon R, you should check out the Nissan Magnite. It has a 5-star Global NCAP rating. At 1758mm, it is not too much wider than the Maruti Wagon R - just about 14cm, and above all else, it is a spacious, practical and good value-for-money compact SUV. At 334 litres, its boot size is decent, and its 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine offers good mileage. However, if you want even more boot space, check out the Renault Triber. If you remove the third row of seats, has a solid 625 litres of boot space. It uses the same 1.0-litre petrol engine as the Magnite, and has received a 4-star Global NCAP crash test rating.

I previously owned an Omni, which was mostly used by my father. I’m now planning to buy a new car. My monthly running will be around 1,500 km-about 1,200 km for daily office commuting near the outskirts of Hyderabad (via ORR), and the rest for family use. Usually, there will be 4-5 occupants, and very occasionally 6. I’m considering the Renault Triber or the upcoming Nissan Magnite (7-seater options within my budget), but I’m unsure due to feedback from friends about Renault–Nissan’s part quality and long-term reliability. Since I don’t plan to sell the car in the future, my priority is low maintenance, good mileage, and long-term reliability rather than features. I’m also open to 5-seater options if these 7-seaters aren’t advisable, for example, the Maruti Dzire. Additionally, I’d like to know whether the Tata Punch EV (base variant) would be a good choice. I’m open to other suggestions and would appreciate detailed advice.

The recently facelifted Renault Triber and upcoming Nissan Gravite are both good options for your usage. Essentially the same car under the skin, they are surprisingly spacious given their sub-4m length and overall size. The advantage of getting a 7-seater in this case is that, for your occasional 6-seat use, you will be able to manage with this car, and for the rest of the time, your 4-5 passengers will be more comfortable, and you can carry some luggage too. As a commuter, its compact dimensions make it easy to manage around town. Renault and Nissan's quality and reliability have come a long way since the early days. Though not quite up to the gold standard of certain other brands, are not a serious issue in the slightest. The Punch EV is a good choice, too. But for the reasons mentioned above, as well as your 1,500km monthly usage, we'd recommend sticking to a 7-seater and an ICE vehicle.

I currently own a 2022 Baleno Zeta AGS and am very happy with its mileage, low maintenance, and ease of driving. I want to exchange it for a compact 7-seater that’s easy to maneuver on Bangalore streets and also comfortable for long road trips. I recently drove the Renault Triber and liked its steering and ride quality. My budget is up to ₹10 lakh- should I buy a new compact 7-seater or consider a good second-hand option?

Given your requirements and budget, you have two options. The Renault Triber is well-priced, genuinely practical, versatile and can accommodate up to seven passengers. But its 72hp, 1.0-litre petrol engine feels lethargic, especially when the car's fully loaded.Alternatively, you could consider the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. The Ertiga is more spacious, has a more powerful and refined engine and being a Maruti car, you'll also like the peace of mind it comes with. There are currently two Maruti Ertiga variants (LXi and VXi) that are priced below Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).

Renault Triber FAQs

The difference between the Renault Triber manual and AMT’s ARAI-claimed figures are not steep. Therefore, given its ease of use and drivability factor in traffic conditions, the Triber AMT remains a good option even for buyers worried about fuel efficiency.
