In a report card that read negative across all segments in terms of domestic sales for Maruti Suzuki India during June 2016, the only reprieve came through the good showing of the utility vehicle segment that was up 75.5 percent with sales of 9,708 units over a low base in June 2015 (5,531). The Vitara Brezza, launched this March, has proved to be hugely successful and has Maruti has sold 20,588 units of the compact SUV until May 2016, helping beef up UV volumes. In June, sales of the Brezza were at around 6,600 units.

After averaging a waiting period of seven months with the top-end variants extending up to nine months, production of the Vitara Brezza at the Gurgaon plant is being scaled up to 10,000 units monthly from mid-July from the earlier 8,000 units, according to a company spokesperson.

Baleno production under pressure

The Baleno, Maruti's hot-selling premium hatchback, sold through the Nexa channel, had crossed sales of 71,200 units by end-June and is averaging an eight-month booking period. In June 2016, it sold 6,900 units, a tad lower than the 9,000-odd units it was selling monthly since its roll out in October. The company had ramped up production of the Baleno at its Manesar plant in April 2016 to about 12,000 units a month to meet rising demand for the model which is also being exported to parent Suzuki Motor Corp in Japan and to Europe.

Once the new Gujarat plant starts production from January-February 2017, the pressure on the Baleno's production will ease out. Clearly, Maruti Suzuki India’s capacity constraints are costing it dear. The company reported a negative growth of 10.2 percent in June with domestic sales of 92,133 units, but with the ramp up of Vitara Brezza production, it expects to tide over this rough patch.
A fire at key vendor Subros’ factory last month led to halting of work at Maruti's Manesar and Gurgaon plants. This was followed by a week-long closure for annual maintenance which affected production schedules.

Neat dashboard is typical BMW fare. Orange ambient lighting is very well executed.

Front seats good but not great.

Second row easily the most spacious here.

6.5-inch central screen is easy to navigate through. Top M Sport car gets larger 8.8-inch unit.

X1’s boot is large as is and space can be increased by sliding the rear seat forward

Q3’s dashboard is simple in design but aluminium accents help jazz up the appearance.

Large front seats offer good all-round support.

Rear seat is comfy but is best for two.

Audi’s MMI system is user-friendly but the interface has started looking a bit dated now.

You can store plenty of luggage in the Q3’s large and well-shaped boot

GLA dash has its nice details but the centre screen seems like an afterthought.

Low driving position least SUV-like.

Cabin roomier than it looks but rear squab short.

Merc’s 5.7-inch screen is the smallest here and the low-res graphics don’t help either.

GLA’s spare wheel sits in boot and occupies a lot of usable luggage space.
