Toyota has introduced a mild-hybrid version of the Hilux in the European market, just a few months after it began testing prototypes in Africa. Called the Hilux MHEV, Toyota will build this iteration in Thailand for the European market.

  1. Hilux MHEV gets 2.8-litre diesel with mild-hybrid tech
  2. No other changes visible
  3. Will go on sale in other markets soon

Toyota Hilux MHEV: what is it?

In pursuit of better fuel economy and lower emissions, the 2.8-litre diesel engine on the Hilux gets a 48V mild-hybrid setup replete with an electric motor generator and a few other components. Toyota had earlier claimed that the addition of this tech “will not have any impact on the Hilux's off-road and towing capabilities." Sources tell us that the Hilux MHEV will only be available on the top variants, with lower trims getting it a little later.

Toyota says that the components for the mild-hybrid setup have been strategically placed, which allows for a water wading depth of 700mm. The brand has also claimed that this system will provide enhanced torque assist, smoother start/stop functions, regenerative braking and up to 10 percent better fuel efficiency compared to diesel-only powertrains.

Toyota MHEV introduction timeline

Apart from Europe, Toyota will launch the Hilux MHEV in South Africa, Australia and ASEAN markets in the near future. The 2.8-litre diesel engine on the Hilux also does duty on multiple Toyota models, including the Fortuner SUV, the recently introduced all-new Land Cruiser Prado and the updated, retro-styled Land Cruiser 70. Toyota had earlier confirmed that the Fortuner is one of the next models from the brand to feature mild-hybrid tech.

Toyota Hilux MHEV, Fortuner MHEV India launch details

Toyota locally assembles the Fortuner and Hilux in India, and both models come with the same 2.8-litre diesel engine that has received the MHEV tech overseas. Although Toyota is expected to introduce this tech in India sometime next year, it remains to be seen which among these two will get it first.
