Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has revealed that the carmaker is considering the option of discontinuing its diesel engines from 2020, though a final decision hasn’t been made yet.

Speaking to Reuters, Blume said that Porsche’s current generation of diesel engines might be its last, and they would gradually be phased out in favour of petrol engines, plug-in hybrid drivetrains and electric motors.

Almost 15 percent of all new cars currently sold by Porsche are powered by diesel, comprising mostly Cayennes and Macans. However, the company has recently increased its investments in electric technology to expand its range of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Performances of the new Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo and the all-electric Mission E, set to be launched in 2020, will play a crucial part in the company’s decision-making regarding its way forward.

Until Porsche takes the final call, the redesigned Cayenne will be launched in September and it will still offer a diesel version, Blume said, just like the Panamera sedan that was internationally launched last year.
