Mercedes A-Class successor to come with multiple powertrains

Mercedes has approved plans for an A-Class hatchback replacement. Insiders have told Autocar UK that a new entry-level luxury hatchback will indirectly replace the A-Class, which is to be axed in 2028.

  1. Replacement to share dimensions with the upcoming third-gen GLA
  2. Hatchback to be built on Mercedes’ MMA platform
  3. The model will target the BMW 1 Series, Audi A3 and the VW ID Golf electric

The move comes as a surprise, considering the German automaker’s recent model strategy caters more towards expensive models in its portfolio. Mercedes, in fact, extended the fourth-gen A-Class hatchback to 2028 owing to global dealer pressure amidst continued demand.

Mercedes A-Class hatchback replacement details

Wide range of powertrains to target key rivals

The new hatchback will be sold with a range of electric and ICE powertrains, aimed at rivals such as the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3 hatchback. In its electric avatar, Mercedes also aims to rival the upcoming electric Volkswagen ID. Golf. As the platform can accommodate ICE and EV powertrains, Mercedes does not have to deal with the costs associated with building an EV-only platform.

Design to retain the traditional hatchback look

The design of the hatchback is currently under wraps. Suggestions from insiders indicate that the traditional hatchback silhouette will be retained, with dimensions like the wheelbase and track width similar to those of the upcoming third-gen GLA.

Hatchback to be built on a shared platform

The A-Class hatchback replacement will be built on Mercedes’ new MMA platform. This platform is shared with models like the CLA sedan, CLA estate, and the upcoming GLA and GLB SUVs. It will be the fifth bodystyle five-door model in Mercedes’ range to use the platform.

This move by Mercedes comes alongside reports of its half-yearly global sales dropping by 6 percent, with a 19 percent decrease in EV sales. It marks a reversal from the recent model strategy headed by Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius, which was initially higher-end focused.

Currently, in India, the Mercedes A-Class hatchback is sold only in AMG guise, along with the A-Class limousine sedan.
