A year and a half after its EV-only rebranding exercise, Jaguar has revealed ‘Type 01’ to be the name of its upcoming fourdoor GT. While camouflaged test mules of this luxury EV have been seen testing, prototypes of the Type 01 will be officially rolled out this following weekend at the Monaco EPrix with “distinctive camouflage wrap”, Jaguar confirmed.

Jaguar officially unveils ‘Type 01’ name

According to Jaguar, the ‘Type 01’ name unites the brand’s history in design, technology and performance. The automaker also explained what the name means – ‘Type’ referencing older Jaguar models, ‘0’ denoting zero tailpipe emissions, and ‘1’ signifying the first Jaguar for the new era. Previous Jaguar cars have used ‘Type’ in their names; for example the Type C from 1951, Type D from 1954 and Type E from 1961. The most recent model to use this nomenclature was the F-Type, which was discontinued in 2024.

Jaguar Type 01: More details

The first set of prototypes of the new Type 01 will be showcased at the upcoming 2026 Monaco Formula E-Prix, prior to the Jaguar TCS Racing team’s race session. For reference, the Monaco EPrix is scheduled to take place from May 16-17. The prototypes will be wrapped in distinctive camouflage, Jaguar stated.

As seen in the first set of shots released by Jaguar of the Type 01 testbeds, the production-spec model is expected to feature a long bonnet, sloped roofline and upright front and rear ends. Furthermore, the four-door GT will sport a ‘Type 01’ branding on the bonnet near the windshield, plus “bold linear graphics”.

Jaguar has kept most of the tech specs of its upcoming EV under wraps. However, we know that the Type 01 will be underpinned by the Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) and offered with three electric motors capable of making 1,000hp and over 1,300Nm of torque. There will also be air suspension with twin-valve active dampers and a WLTP-claimed range of 700km.

The luxury British marque mentioned that the Type 01’s “exuberant modernist design, pioneering technology and instinctive driving dynamics” will make it to future Jaguar models. The production-spec avatar of the Type 01 is set to make its global unveil later in 2026, with an India debut expected by late 2027 or early 2028.
