Datsun has launched the Go+ MPV in India starting at Rs 3.79 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Go+ is the budget brand’s second model in India after the Go hatchback.

What is interesting is that, although the Go+ is bigger than the hatchback, it is just under four metres in length. This makes the Datsun Go+ the first compact MPV in India. It is 3,995mm in length, 1,635mm in width, and 1,490mm in height. Its wheelbase at 2,450mm, is the same as the Go hatchback, as is the engine. The Go+ uses the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that makes 67bhp and 10.61kgm of torque. It is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

The Go+ is essentially a stretched-out version of the hatchback. Yes, it has the exact same exterior design as the Go, with an extension beyond the rear doors. Inside the cabin too, the story is similar. It gets the same minimal, functional treatment, as in the hatchback. The Go+ has been made available in four trim levels – D, D1, A, T – and all of them are sparsely equipped. The D and D1 trims don’t even get an AC. Power steering and front power windows too, are available only on the top T trim. Highlight of the Go+, which is the third row of seats, is practically unusable. In fact, fold up the third row and you have close to 350 litres of boot space. That’s more than some compact sedans, and makes the Go+ somewhat of a big hatchback with decent load carrying capacity.

The fact that the Go+ is a sub-4 metre car helps it avoid taxation, which has allowed Datsun to price it so attractively. But even at this pricing, the compact MPV’s budget treatment cannot be overlooked. In a market that is seeing seven-seaters and MPVs getting very popular, the Go+ is Datsun’s attempt to provide seven seats on a tight budget.
