Chevrolet Camaro Collectors Edition

Chevrolet has announced that the series production of its popular Camaro sportscar has ended. The first Camaro was revealed back in 1967.

The sixth-generation Camaro that was unveiled nine years ago, got multiple refreshes along its life cycle and had various powertrain options, all aimed squarely at its arch-rival, the Ford Mustang. The final car to roll off the assembly line is a ZL1 1LE variant that comes with a 6.2-litre V8 engine, and this particular unit was equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox.

  • Camaro collector’s edition was limited to 350 units
  • There are quite a few privately imported Camaros in India

General Motors has not revealed whether the last Camaro will go on sale, but Chevrolet did introduce a Camaro Collector's Edition a few months ago. It was limited to just 350 units, which indirectly signalled the end of production for the current-gen car.

Since its debut in 1967, Chevrolet sold four consecutive generations of the Camaro until 2003, post which there was a seven year gap until the fifth-gen car was unveiled in 2010. According to sources, this is the “end of the Camaro”; the end of production of the current-gen car with no replacement in sight puts a second pause in the car’s over 50-year-old history.

The Camaro was not officially sold in India, but the model has been quite popular since its debut. There have also been quite a few private imports of previous-gen Camaros in our market, usually seen in yesteryear Bollywood movies from the 70s and 80s. Even in current times, there are a few privately imported fifth- and sixth-gen Camaros in India, in both coupe and convertible body styles. The Camaro’s main rival, the Ford Mustang, did have a short run in India from 2016 to 2019. Ford decided to shut shop in our market in 2021, but General Motors, along with its Chevorlet brand, exited India in 2017 itself.
