Chinese carmaker Build Your Dreams (BYD) has introduced its all-electric e6 MPV for private buyers in the Indian market for Rs 29.15 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The MPV is available in two variants – GL and GLX. The GLX costs Rs 29.60 lakh (ex-showroom, India) and adds an AC fast charger option.

    • BYD e6 has a claimed city range of 523km
    • Electric motor develops 95hp and 180Nm

The BYD e6 MPV was launched in India last year at the same price, but it was then exclusively available to commercial and fleet buyers. Now with its entry into the private passenger vehicle segment, the e6 is the only full-electric MPV you can buy in India at the moment.

BYD e6: battery, range and electric motor

The BYD e6 comes with LFP ‘Blade' Batteries, a patented technology developed by FinDreams a BYD subsidiary. Blade batteries offer more efficient packaging and better energy density than conventional LFP cells and hence are a sought after technology.

The e6 MPV is based on the carmaker’s e-platform and features a 71.7kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery that is paired to a single front-axle mounted electric motor making 95hp and 180Nm, and it allows the e6 to reach a maximum top speed of 130kph.

The highlight of the e6 is its claimed range. On a single charge, BYD claims a combined WLTC range of 415km – not to be confused with the more rigorous WLTP test cycle. This figure increases to 520km per charge on the WLTC city cycle.

The MPV also has a regenerative braking system and it supports DC fast charging that charges the car from 30-80 percent in 35 minutes, with a full charge taking 90 minutes. The higher GLX trim also gives owners the option of a 40kW wall-mounted AC fast charger, which enables a full charge in two hours and 6.6kW AC slow chargers, which can do the job in roughly 12 hours.

BYD e6: features, dimensions and rivals

In terms of equipment, the e6 MPV gets LED DRLs, leather seats, 6-way adjustable driver and front passenger seats, a 10.1-inch rotatable touchscreen with bluetooth and WiFi, in-built navigation and a CN95 air filtration system.

The e6 is the only full-electric MPV you can buy in India today and, as a result, there are no direct rivals. However, some of the similarly priced EVs include the Hyundai Kona and MG ZS EV.
