Tesla has launched model year updates for its Model S sedan and Model X SUV in overseas markets. Both EVs now come with minor design changes, improved ride comfort, new features, an extra colour option, and a steep price increase of $5,000 (Rs 4.30 lakh) across all variants.

Model S Plaid looks a bit sportier
Styling changes for the Model S are limited to its 1,034hp Plaid trim, which gets more aggressive bumper designs with larger air intakes at the front. Tesla claims that this enhances the Model S Plaid’s high-speed stability. The sedan is also equipped with redesigned 19-inch aero-optimised alloy wheels; 21-inchers are available as an option. The Model X sports new 20-inch alloy wheels too, which can be specced up to 22 inches, but the SUV doesn’t have any design updates beyond these.
New paint options
The updated Model S and Model X can be had with a new Frost Blue Metallic paint finish for an additional $2,500 (Rs 2.15 lakh), and Tesla has also replaced their current black colour options with a new Diamond Black finish, which costs $1,500 (Rs 1.29 lakh). They also get a new front parking camera that aids their Autopilot and Smart Summon functions, as well as adaptive headlights.

Ambient lighting and decreased cabin noise
Inside, there’s more efficient sound deadening and active noise cancellation to keep things quieter for occupants while on the go, and both the Model S and Model X are now equipped with customisable ambient lighting that extends to the footwells.
Model X third row space and boot volume upped
Tesla has even freed up some more space in the Model X’s third row, with the SUV’s boot space also increasing by 70.8 litres. Lastly, the yoke steering wheel is no longer available as an option on the non-Plaid trims of the Model S and Model X, but it remains a $1,000 (Rs 86,080) option for Plaid buyers.

Higher range figures
No major changes have been made to the 100kWh, dual-motor powertrains (tri-motor in Plaid variants) of the Model S and Model X, but there are range improvements for both EVs. The Model S Long Range now ekes out a claimed 660km of range, while the Model S Plaid’s range has increased to 592km.
Oddly though, the Model S Plaid’s claimed top speed has dropped from 322kph to 240kph following the update. As for the Model X, the Long Range variant can now travel up to a claimed 566km on a single charge, whereas the Plaid’s range is 539km.
Suspension tweaks for greater ride comfort
Tesla has also incorporated new bushings in the suspension and improved its design in the Model S and Model X, which, according to the EV maker, should make for a smoother ride.

Blanket price hike of $5000
The base Long Range trim of the Model S now starts at $86,630 (Rs 74.57 lakh), while the high-performance Plaid trim costs $101,630 (Rs 87.48 lakh). The Model X range now starts at $91,630 (Rs 78.87 lakh), with the Plaid commanding a $106,630 (Rs 91.78 lakh) price tag.

Model S and Model X not coming to India for now
It’s an open secret by now that Tesla is planning to enter the Indian market sometime this year. The American EV maker has been hiring for jobs in India, and has even secured lease agreements for showroom spaces in Delhi and Mumbai.
As for which Tesla cars could launch in India first, the Model Y midsize SUV has been spotted testing here on multiple occasions, and homologation for the Model 3 sedan was initiated a few months ago. However, it doesn’t appear that Tesla is planning to launch the Model S and Model X in India, at least initially.
