The Renault Kiger and Volkswagen Taigun are both contenders at the 2022 edition of the World Car of the Year awards. The two made-in-India SUVs are part of the preliminary list of candidates in contention for the World Urban Car of the Year 2022 as well as contenders for the World Car of the Year 2022.

2022 World Car awards: Kiger, Taigun make preliminary shortlist
The made-in-India Renault Kiger and the recently launched Volkswagen Taigun have both made the initial shortlist for the 2022 World Car awards. Both models have been deemed eligible under the Urban Car category and are set to contend for the World Car of the Year 2022.
According to the Urban Car award listing, the two cars will not only go head-to-head but also compete against the Citroen C3 – not the model for India – the Toyota Yaris Cross crossover and the Dacia Sandero. The list is yet to be finalised and we could see revisions.
Moving to the top honours, both vehicles will go up against global names such as the new Toyota GR86, Chevrolet Corvette C8, BMW i4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L to name a few.
2022 World Car awards: new EV category debuts
The 2022 awards sees the debut of a new purpose-made Electric Vehicle category. Notable entrants in the category include Audi’s e-tron GT (recently launched in India), Q4 and Q5 Sportback e-tron, BMW’s i4, iX and iX3, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and the Volvo C40 Recharge.
2022 World Car awards: other categories and contenders
Starting with the Luxury Car category, Audi’s e-tron GT and Q5 along with the BMW iX, iX3 and Volvo C40 Recharge make the shortlist of initial contenders here as well. Also in the running are the new Toyota Land Cruiser and the Genesis GV70 SUV.
In the performance car category, prominent names include the BMW M3 and M4, Porsche’s 911 GT3 and Cayenne Turbo GT, the VW Golf GTI and Audi’s RS3. Also in the running are two models from Hyundai’s N sub-brand the Elantra N and the Kona N along with the new generations of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR 86.
Additionally, all contenders in each category of the World Car of the Year awards also qualify for the World Car Design of the Year award.
2022 World Car awards: final shortlists
The first round of voting for the awards will commence early next year. The list of finalists is expected to be announced by March with the category winners being announced at the 2022 New York Auto Show on April 13.
