Global NCAP’s Maruti Suzuki S Presso safety rating explained

The Maruti Suzuki S Presso has scored a poor 0 star rating in the latest round of Global NCAP’s crash tests, which is part of its ‘Safer Cars For India’ programme. The hatchback also scored a 2 star rating for child occupant protection. The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso variant tested by Global NCAP, going by the image, was the mid-spec VXi trim that only offers a single airbag for the driver with the front passenger airbag being an optional fitment. Only the fully-loaded S Presso VXi+ offer dual airbags.

According to the Global NCAP tests, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso’s poor rating is mainly due to high damage readings in the neck region of adult front passenger test dummies. Similar high damage readings were also noticed in the driver’s chest area, which could prove to be highly detrimental in the event of crash. In terms of individual crash scores for adult passengers, the Maruti Suzuki S Presso scored 0.00 out of a total score of 17.00.

For the rear seat child occupant safety, Global NCAP noted poor scores for both test dummies due to the poor performance of the restraint systems. This is mainly due to the fact that the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso does not get ISOFIX anchorage points for child/booster seats. In terms of individual crash test scores for child passengers, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso scored 13.84 out of a total score of 49.00.

In post-crash analysis, Global NCAP’s results also found that the footwell area was deemed unstable. The crash test results also showed the overall structure of the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso to be unstable. Global NCAP has only conducted a frontal impact tests for these results and, as always, the test was conducted at 64kph.

In the past, Global NCAP has also crash tested Maruti Suzuki cars like the Ertiga, Wagon R, Eeco, Vitara Brezza and others, with results ranging from 0-4 stars.
