Maruti Suzuki cuts production by over 18 percent in May

Maruti Suzuki India has cut vehicle production by over 18 percent in the month of May, as per PTI. The country's largest carmaker produced a total of 1,51,188 units in May 2019, down 18.1 percent from the 1,84,612 units in May 2018.

Excluding the Super Carry commercial vehicle, the carmaker slashed production of all other segments, including its big selling compact and mini cars segment last month. Maruti cut production of passenger vehicles by 18.88 percent to 1,48,095, compared to the 1,82,571 units in May 2018. The carmaker cut production of mini segment vehicles, like the Alto, by 42.29 percent to 23,874 units compared to 41,373 units in the same period a year ago.

Production of compact segment cars like the Dzire was also slashed by 9.54 percent to 84,705 units from 93,641 units in the corresponding month of last year. Production of utility vehicles like the Vitara Brezza was down by 3.21 percent to 24,748 units, against 25,571 units in May last year. Additionally, production of vans like the Eeco was dropped by 34.99 percent to 10,934 units, from the 16,819 units in May 2018.

This is Maruti's fourth consecutive month of taking a production cut. The company had reduced production by over 8 percent in February, by 20.9 percent in March and by around 10 percent in the month of April. Sales of new cars have been plummeting since the start of the year, with the passenger vehicle segment witnessing its worst-ever monthly sales in eight years in April 2019.
