Yamaha R15V4 Expert Review
9.0
The Yamaha YZF-R15 V4 gets a big design update and now takes inspiration from the larger YZF-R7. The front-end looks sharper, with a bi-functional LED projector headlight sitting inside the faux air intake and LED position lights on either side. The new windscreen also offers better wind protection. The side fairing, fuel tank and tail section have all been redesigned, giving the bike a more cohesive look. The slimmer fuel tank also makes it easier to grip the bike with your knees. Yamaha has improved the overall quality as well, with better plastics, switchgear, buttons and paint finish.
7.0
The seat is now slimmer near the tank and feels more comfortable. Seat height remains at 815mm. The footpeg position is unchanged, but the clip-on handlebars now sit below the triple clamp. This gives the R15 a slightly sportier riding position, although it is not dramatically different from the earlier bike. The riding position can still feel tiring on long highway rides.
9.0
The 155cc, liquid-cooled, four-valve engine continues to be the main highlight. Although power is down by 0.2hp, there is no noticeable difference in performance. The engine feels smooth and free-revving, while VVA helps it deliver stronger performance as the revs rise. The six-speed gearbox is smooth, and the optional up-only quickshifter works well in track mode. Fuel economy should be close to the previous R15 V3, which returned 37.2kpl in the city and nearly 50kpl on the highway.
9.0
Handling remains one of the R15's biggest strengths. The new USD fork helps with stability while cornering and during hard braking. The Deltabox frame and suspension allow the bike to hold its line well through corners. Turn-in is quite sharp and may take some time to get used to, but the ride remains reasonably comfortable over most road surfaces.
8.0
The R15 V4 gets an LCD instrument panel with Bluetooth connectivity and support for phone, SMS and email notifications through Yamaha's Y-Connect app. There is also a track mode that shows lap times. Traction control is another important addition, while the brakes continue to offer good bite and feedback.
9.0
The R15 V4 makes up for it with its quality, features and strong riding experience. For someone looking to learn and improve their riding skills on a track, the R15 V4 remains a very capable and forgiving motorcycle.
