Yamaha FZ Rave Expert Review

Design and Quality

7.0

The Yamaha FZ Rave follows the familiar FZ formula but gets a new front-end design inspired by the FZ25. The mono-projector LED headlamp and pilot lamps give it a sharper look and more presence. Apart from the front-end changes, the Yamaha FZ Rave remains visually similar to the other FZ models. The update is therefore more about the new lighting design than a major change to the motorcycle.

Position and Comfort

8.0

The Yamaha FZ Rave continues to be a straightforward, practical and easy-to-live-with motorcycle. There are no major changes to its riding position or seating comfort. Its established commuter-focused character remains the same.

Performance and Fuel Economy / Range

7.0

The Yamaha FZ Rave uses the same 149cc single-cylinder engine found across the FZ range. It produces 12.4hp and 13.3Nm and comes with a five-speed gearbox. The engine’s biggest strength is its tractability. It can amble along easily in second or third gear and pulls cleanly from low speeds. Throttle response is predictable and refinement is good, but it is not a quick or exciting motorcycle. The Rave can show an indicated 100kph, although its comfortable cruising speed is below 85kph. In earlier tests, this engine returned around 48.5kpl in real-world conditions.

Ride and Handling

8.0

The suspension is pliant and handles regular road conditions well. The Yamaha FZ Rave feels settled at cruising speeds and gives more confidence in corners than a typical commuter. However, braking performance could be better. The rear brake feels soggy, while the front brake lacks a strong initial bite.

Features and Safety

7.0

The Yamaha FZ Rave keeps things simple. Its small LCD instrument display looks dated and can be difficult to read in direct sunlight. It does not come with a gear-position indicator. The motorcycle does not focus on adding extra technology and instead retains its straightforward approach.

Price and Verdict (Overall Rating)

7.0

The Yamaha FZ Rave sits alongside the FZS-Fi V4 and FZ-X in terms of price. Overall, the Yamaha FZ Rave remains a simple and practical motorcycle with a smooth, frugal engine and a fresh-looking front end. Its restrained nature suits buyers looking for an easy-to-live-with commuter, rather than an exciting one.
