Considering this is going to be your first bike, we would recommend you start with something approachable and friendly like the Honda CB300F or the TVS Apache RTR 310. The Honda bike’s USPs are its affordable price tag, low ownership costs and light weight paired with a low seat height. Meanwhile, the TVS bike will have more exciting performance, sharper handling, as well as a smorgasbord of features.Considering its near 200kg kerb weight, we'd recommend you steer clear of the Royal Enfield Bullet 350 and instead look at the Hunter 350, which has the same engine but is much lighter and more manageable. With its 40hp/40Nm output figures, the Guerrilla packs in very engaging performance and will be the most fun and exciting for a first-time buyer, but it can also feel overwhelming at times for a newer rider.Take an exhaustive test ride of all the options you shortlist to see which one fits you and your usage best.

If you want your new bike to be sporty and compact, then bikes like the KTM 390 Duke, TVS Apache RTR 310 and Honda CB300R would be our recommendation. If you want to have a machine that's capable of doing longer distances with luggage and/or a pillion, then an adventure bike like the KTM 390 Adventure (either of the 2 variants will do) or the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 will fit the bill. Before pulling the trigger, try to get long test rides of every bike you are considering to make an informed decision.

The Apache has a friendly 800mm seat height, plush suspension that still gives you the composure you need when riding hard and a punchy engine. On the higher variants, you also get some very unique features such as keyless ignition and adjustable suspension, although these might cross the Rs 3 lakh mark. Even so, the RTR 310 comes well-equipped out of the box and will offer a good step up in performance compared to your Jawa 42.If you want a touring bike, then your only option in this price range is the 350cc Bajaj Dominar 400. The Dominar has an approachable 800mm seat height, is comfortable, has enough performance and comes with a lot of essentials that you need to go touring, right out of the showroom. It is a heavy machine, but its weight lends it stability on the highway, although at slower city speeds, you will feel it.Take test rides of both before you make a decision to see which one suits your usage pattern better.

Since you want a bike that you will be using through chaotic Mumbai traffic, we'd steer you toward the KTM 250 Duke and Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450. Owing to their more upright rider triangles, these bikes will feel easier to ride through traffic and at slower speeds. Of course, neither will have the outright shove of the manic 390, but the Guerrilla comes close. The 250 Duke, while an enjoyable machine, will feel a clear step down in terms of performance from the 390, although you will see good improvements in fuel economy. Instead of the RR 310, we'd recommend you look at the TVS Apache RTR 310, as it is closer in intent and form to the Duke, and with its upright ergonomics and well-judged suspension, it will suit your use case quite well.Take a test ride of these three bikes before you go ahead with your purchase.We'd also urge you to pressure the dealer to deliver the bike.
