Yamaha has finally launched the YZF-R2, the much-awaited follow-up to the YZF-R15. Pre-bookings had opened on August 12 for Rs 10,000. The R15 will also continue to be on sale alongside the R2, MT-15 and XSR 155.

Yamaha R2: What’s new from the R15?
Brand-new platform and multiple new features
The R2 is built on an all-new platform with a 204cc engine that develops 26.5hp at 10,000rpm and 19.1Nm at 8,000rpm. While it is also a single-cylinder liquid-cooled mill like the one that powers the R15, it features a DOHC setup instead of the R15’s SOHC setup and lacks Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). The valves on the R2 are coated with DLC (diamond-like carbon), also seen on the erstwhile flagship YZF-R1. The frame, too, is different. The R15’s Deltabox frame has been swapped out for a diamond steel frame that weighs just 14kg. Thanks to this, Yamaha reports a kerb weight of 149kg for the R2’s base variant, making it the lightest bike in its segment. Both the middle and top variants weigh 150kg. The seat height stands at 810mm, 5mm lower than the R15’s. In addition to its significant weight advantage, the R2 offers slightly more power and a torque figure similar to its segment rivals, the KTM RC 200 and Hero Karizma XMR.

Three variants with a maximum price difference of Rs 23,000
Yamaha is looking to sweeten the deal further with features including a ride-by-wire throttle that enables three ride modes, an assist and slipper clutch, 37mm USD forks and dual-channel ABS as standard. It continues to offer features such as a 5-inch TFT dash and traction control – all seen on the R15 M. The second variant steps it up by offering a segment-first bi-directional quickshifter and body-coloured alloy wheels. The range-topping R2 M variant adds preload-adjustable front and rear suspension, adjustable brake and clutch levers, a faux-suede seat and a keyless system. All three variants get their own distinct colours.
Yamaha has announced that the YZF-R2 will be available exclusively through its Blue Square network. The R2 costs Rs 2.30 lakh for the base variant, Rs 2.39 lakh for the middle variant and Rs 2.53 lakh for the top-of-the-line M variant (all prices are ex-showroom, Delhi). Bookings are open, and deliveries will start in mid-September.
