After unveiling their Y-AMT gearbox tech last month, Yamaha has now announced that the MT-09 will be the first model to feature that tech.

  1. Gets 3 shifting modes - 2 automatic, 1 manual
  2. Mechanically identical to the standar MT09 except gearbox
  3. Will be launched in Japan first, by end 2024

Yamaha MT-09 automatic gearbox, engine details

The Yamaha MT-09 is powered by a liquid-cooled, 890cc, three-cylinder engine which puts out 119hp at 10,000rpm and 93 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. It is paired to a 6-speed gearbox, in both manual and Y-AMT variants. The kerb weight of the Y-AMT variant is 196 kg, which is slightly heavier than the base bike that weighs 193kg.

The MT09 Y-AMT's suspension setup consists of a full-adjustable USD fork and a monoshock that has adjustable preload and rebound damping. Braking is handled by a 298mm dual disc set-up at the front and a 245mm single disc at the rear. It gets a number of riding aids which  include traction control, ABS, slide control and wheelie control. The MT09 is also one of the few middleweight naked sportbikes to get cruise control. The Y-AMT variant is identical in all other aspects, save for the gearbox, to the standard MT-09.

The basic configuration of the Y-AMT equips the MT-09’s transmission with actuators to perform shifting and clutch operations. The gearbox shifts automatically so riders do not need to shift while accelerating, braking, or coming to a stop. Although, if riders do want to take manual control over the gear shifts, a seesaw style gear is present on the left hand side switch cube.

Riders can toggle between 3 modes of shifting: Automatic D, Automatic D+ and Manual using the switch gear on the right hand side of the handlebar. A plus and minus toggle switch is present on the left hand switch cube which allows the rider to manually take control.

The Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT will start selling in Japan at the end of this year.  Considering Yamaha is yet to introduce any of its premium, large-capacity models in India, the launch of the MT 09 Y-AMT seems quite unlikely, at least in the near future. However, in the past, Yamaha did sell the MT 09 in India for a brief period before it was discontinued due to poor sales and limited brand awareness.
