Occupying the upper-most echelons of Mercedes-Benz’s lineup, the S-Class has always been the Stuttgart-based automaker’s flagship sedan. The updated S-Class for 2026 carries over the six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines from earlier, along with the 48V mild-hybrid system and a range of technical upgrades. Mercedes has also tinkered with the S 580’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo eight-cylinder engine, so it now puts out 537hp and 750Nm. There will be a more powerful interpretation of this V8 in the brand’s upcoming AMG cars. As for competition, the closest one is the BMW 7 Series.
