The Triumph Thruxton 400 has been inspired mainly by the Thruxton 1200 R. Apart from retro-racer styling, Triumph have updated the bike with significant changes when compared to the Speed 400 to suit its character better.
What engine is used in the Triumph Thruxton 400, and what are the power figures?
The Thruxton 400 shares its engine with the Speed 400 but gets some changes to suit its character better. The 398cc, single-cylinder engine has been tuned to put out 42hp at 9,000rpm and a peak torque of 37.5 Nm at 7,500 rpm, making it 2hp more powerful than the Speed 400. The peak power and torque come in 1000rpm later, and the redline is also higher, now at 10,200rpm.
Another change is the rear sprocket on the Thruxton 400 is 2 teeth smaller than the Speed 400. Triumph have also gone with a different cam timing and airbox breather which is said to help the bike rev higher and hold higher rpms for longer. With all of these changes, it is the quickest accelerating bike from the Triumph 400cc range and also has the highest claimed top-speed of 161kph among the lot.
What are the main differences between the Triumph Thruxton 400 and Speed 400?
Apart from engine tuning, the bike gets a more sporty rider triangle, placing a rider in an aggressive stance. The bike also gets clip-on handlebars which are placed lower than the handlebars of the Speed 400, and a redesigned fuel tank which is slimmer, longer and sports a Monza-style fuel lid. The fuel tank has the same 13-litre capacity.
The bike also has a redesigned tail section with a pillion seat cowl, a new grab rail, rectangular LED taillight, and shorter mudguard compared to the Speed 400. To accommodate a pillion, the cowl can be removed by unscrewing two bolts after opening the single-piece seat. The bike misses out on golden coloured forks compared to the Speed 400, but a nice touch is the new oil reservoir cup.
Is the Thruxton 400 good for daily commuting and highway riding?
The aggressive riding position means it is not the most comfortable over long distances and while stuck in traffic. For short commutes, the riding position is totally fine and it has a fairly comfortable seat. With a kerb weight of 83kg, it is 4kg heavier than the Speed 400 but feels light on the go and the 795mm seat height makes it accessible to shorter riders as well. The Thruxton 400 feels in its element out on open twisty roads, making it a sweet bike for those quick morning rides.

What is the price of the Thruxton 400, is it worth picking over the Speed 400 and what are its competitors?
The Thruxton 400 is priced at Rs 2.74 lakh (ex-showroom), making it around Rs 25,000 more than the Speed 400. At this price, it is positioned between the Scrambler 400 X and 400 XC in the Triumph 400cc lineup.
The bike offers more potent performance, but its aggressive riding posture might be a deal breaker for some. Enthusiasts who have always wanted a café racer will surely appreciate the Thruxton 400. The only other proper café racer available is the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650, making it its main competitor.
