Hyundai Creta Electric vs Tata Curvv EV vs MG ZS EV vs BYD Atto 3 charging time and speed test

The third round of our charging time tests, in partnership with Zeon Charging, had four all-electric midsize SUVs – the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV and the BYD Atto 3. Each of these EV's charging cycles were analysed by us and Zeon Charging – one of India’s leading providers –  across 10 to 50 sessions per EV, factoring in different times of day, locations and weather conditions. It should also be noted that all sessions were conducted on DC fast chargers capable of delivering speeds well above the vehicle’s maximum charging rate. We've listed the cars in ascending order of their price.

Here's how long you'll have to wait to fast charge your midsize e-SUV, and how much range you would get in that span of time.

MG ZS EV

Rs 18.98 lakh-26.64 lakh

MG ZS EV charging time and speed tested

The MG ZS EV charges at a peak of 69kW, but the speed gradually declines right from the start. The 20-80 percent charge time is still a quick 35 minutes. This translates to about 270km of range added in 35 minutes of DC fast charging, as our ZS EV range test saw the MG post an efficiency figure of 6.7km/kWh.

Tata Curvv EV 55

Rs 19.25 lakh-21.99 lakh

Tata Curvv EV charging time and speed tested

The Tata Curvv EV 55 charges at 1.2C and reaches a peak speed of 70kW, but it takes 36 minutes to charge from 20-80 percent, slightly longer than the Nexon EV 45. Based on the Curvv EV's real world range test, this Tata EV delivers a combined efficiency of 6.64km/kWh, which means that 36 minutes on a DC fast charger should net you about 279km of range.

Hyundai Creta Electric LR

Rs 21.50 lakh-24.38 lakh

Hyundai Creta Electric charging time and speed tested

Interestingly, the Hyundai Creta Electric shows a rising trend averaging around 42kW, which is lower than both the Nexon 45 and Curvv 55. Charging speed drops sharply beyond 73 percent SoC. Based on our preliminary range test, the Creta Electric Long Range (LR) delivered a real-world range of 426km, which would indicate an impressive efficiency figure of 8.29km/kWh. This would mean that 52 minutes of charging would enable the Creta Electric LR to go an additional 330km.

BYD Atto 3 Dynamic

Rs 24.99 lakh

BYD Atto 3 charging time and speed tested

The BYD Atto 3 Dynamic, which comes with the smaller 49.92kWh battery (unlike the Premium and Superior variants that get a larger 60.48kWh unit), reaches a peak charging speed of 74kW, which is the quickest here, but the rate dips significantly at just 31 percent SoC, with further drops beyond 84 percent and 92 percent.
