I currently own a Jimny AT and am planning to sell it and buy a naturally aspirated petrol automatic car under Rs 18 lakh on-road in Mumbai/Pune. I need it for a family of five. My monthly running is around 800km, with 70% highway and 30% city driving. I am considering only Maruti, Hyundai or Honda. Preferably, I want something with good fuel efficiency and reliability.

Go for the Hyundai Creta because your 70% highway use and family of five will benefit most from its space, calm cruising and real-world efficiency. The 1.5 NA petrol with the automatic is smooth, stress-free and proven reliable, and the big cabin and boot of this Hyundai car make family trips easy. Real-world mileage of this automatic car should be good too, and maintenance should be relatively low. In your budget, you should be able to get the mid-range S (O) CVT. Coming from a Maruti Jimny AT, you’ll love the greater refinement, more comfortable ride and stronger high-speed performance.

From Maruti Suzuki, there are the Grand Vitara and Victoris, which are both excellent options too. Great mileage, smooth gearboxes and exceptional reliability, but for a family of five, space in the back seat isn't as good as the Creta, and the 105hp 1.5-litre petrol can feel overwhelmed under heavy load, especially on the highway, where you do 70% of your driving. Honda's 1.5-litre petrol in Elevate doesn't have this issue, but compared to the Creta, space and comfort aren't quite as good, and it lacks the same wow factor. However, if you don't mind a sedan, the City is a more compelling choice.

Overall, though you won't get it in a higher variant with as many features as others, we feel the Creta is the best all-rounder for the money.

Hi. I own a 2018 Innova Crysta that is in very good condition. I’m an enthusiastic driver. We live in a village and often go to Bangalore. About 80% of my driving is on the highway, and my car is excellent and very comfortable on long drives. In the city, however, I find the steering a bit tight. I’m thinking of buying a second, new midsize car. Would you suggest an AT (automatic torque-converter) or a DCT (dual-clutch transmission) car? We regularly commute with 3–4 people.

I am looking for a mid-size SUV in the Rs 15-16 lakh range. I have narrowed my list down to the new Duster 1.3 Turbo Techno+ and the Hyundai Creta 1.5 NA S(O). I really like the Creta's interior, but I am concerned that since Kia has already launched the new-generation Seltos, the new-generation Creta may not be far away. With an 80km daily run, mostly on the highway, the priority should be a car that is comfortable over long distances, stable at speed and easy to live with. The Duster 1.3 Turbo Techno+ is the better fit here. The Renault Duster’s ride quality is genuinely excellent, soaking up bad roads and undulations in a way few cars in this price range can. It also feels planted and confidence-inspiring at highway speeds, which makes long daily commutes far less tiring. The 1.3 turbo petrol engine is punchy and well-suited to highway driving, giving you strong overtaking performance when you need it. Moreover, the Techno+ variant represents excellent value in this price range, especially for your needs.The Hyundai Creta 1.5 NA S(O) is a very good car, but the naturally aspirated engine is not as strong on the highway, especially when fully loaded. You're right about the new generation; Kia has already launched the new Seltos, and Hyundai is expected to bring the next-generation Creta to India in early 2027. That said, the current Creta is still a very competent product, and Hyundai’s ownership experience and service network are strong.Given your usage, the Duster’s ride comfort, highway stability and stronger engine make it the better buy.

I am looking to buy either an SUV or a Sedan under a budget of Rs. 28 - 30 lakh. I drive an average of 120 km everyday. I am not looking for an EV because the charging infrastructure is not very reliable where I drive to. Could you suggest me a car with good mileage?

With a daily running of 120km, fuel efficiency and long-term reliability become the most important factors. A Honda City hybrid is worth considering, which should easily fall within your budget. Seat comfort is excellent and its hybrid system is particularly effective in city driving, where it can run on electric power at low speeds, and on the highway it remains efficient and refined. Honda's reliability and low maintenance costs make it an excellent long-term ownership proposition, especially given your high annual mileage.If you specifically want an SUV, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid is the next best option. It shares its hybrid system with the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and offers similar fuel efficiency benefits. The Victoris also gets brighter interior, it is comfortable, and it will keep running costs low over the long term.

I live in Hyderabad and am looking for a 5-seater car with a manual transmission and a minimum boot space of 470 litres. I prefer a manual because I feel automatic transmissions are more complex and could be expensive to repair in the future. Another, slightly unusual requirement is that I want a car with a reliable engine and transmission that can last 12-13 years or more, provided it receives timely engine oil changes and regular maintenance. Can anyone suggest some good manual SUV cars with an on-road price below Rs. 20 lakh?

Given your requirements for a large boot, opt for the Honda Elevate. At 458 litres the boot is under your specific measurement but is very well shaped and can easily managed a lot of cargo. Honda are known for their engines and your second requirement of a very reliable engine and gearbox will also be met with the Elevate. If you must have a minimum boot space of 470 litres consider the Renault Duster. At 518 litres the boot is the largest in the mid-size segment and the roof rails are also functional and can hold up to 50kgs so should you need even more space you can opt for a roof box, however check with your local RTO as these are not legal in many instances. If you are not looking for a very peppy drive feel, opt for the smaller 1.0 liter engine which does quite well in everyday traffic and even at steady cruising out on the highway. The engine and gearbox as well as the entire car is built tough and will last you for the 12 odd years you are looking to keeping the car, provided of course all services are done in a timely manner and the car is well looked after.

I am planning to buy a sub-compact SUV. My budget is Rs. 13-14 lakh, and my priorities are a smooth automatic transmission and good mileage. I am considering the Brezza ZXi AT, Sonet HXT DCT, and Venue HX6 DCT. I am very confused because the Brezza’s torque-converter automatic offers good fuel efficiency but lacks some features, while the Sonet and Venue offer all the features I need. However, I am concerned that the DCT may be less fuel-efficient and could involve higher maintenance costs. My daily commute is around 30 km, mostly in heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic. Please suggest which one would be the best choice for my requirements.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT. Your priorities are a smooth automatic, good fuel efficiency and a daily 30km commute in heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic. The Brezza’s 6-speed torque converter automatic is the best fit for this usage. It is smooth, reliable and well suited to stop-start conditions, and the naturally aspirated petrol engine is efficient and easy to live with. Go for the Hyundai Venue. With your daily 35km commute in Delhi NCR traffic, comfort and low maintenance are key, and the Venue delivers on both. The 1.2 NA petrol is smooth, refined and easy to drive in stop-start conditions, while Hyundai’s service network and ownership experience are among the best in the segment. The HX6T variant also gives you a good balance of features without pushing the budget too far.The Sonet HTK+O is mechanically very similar, but the Venue is a newer model and offers a more spacious cabin. The XUV 3XO is also a good option, but its turbo petrol engine won't be as efficient as the Hyundai’s.Overall, the Venue is the most sensible upgrade from your Grand i10 for daily city use.
