I have a budget of around ₹15 lakh (on-road) and am looking for a petrol automatic car. My usage will be approximately 70% city driving and 30% highway, with an annual running of about 10,000 km. My key priorities are reliability, fuel efficiency, and overall value for money. I am currently considering the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Which one should I prefer among these three? Additionally, the newly launched Kia Seltos and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara also seem appealing. Should I consider stretching my budget for these models?

With just 200 km a month in Mumbai and only one or two short road trips a year, buying a new car only makes sense if you value the convenience, safety and freedom of having your own vehicle more than pure cost efficiency. Financially, cabs and rentals would likely make more sense at this level of usage. But if the decision is driven by convenience and the comfort of having your own car available whenever you need it, then it can still absolutely be justified.Of your three options, the Brezza ZXi MT fits your brief best. It is simply the easiest to live with in the city thanks to its light controls, good all round visibility and a comfortable ride that handles Mumbai’s broken roads well. It also offers good rear seat comfort and a practical boot for those occasional weekend trips, while being straightforward and stress free to own.The XUV 3XO is the more feature rich option and feels more substantial from a safety perspective, but it is the heavier car to drive in traffic and does not feel as effortless in everyday city use. The Magnite offers strong value, but compared to the other two it does not feel as premium, and whether you choose the turbo or naturally aspirated petrol, it does not feel quite as effortless to drive in urban conditions either.

With 1,000km a month, mostly in the city, four on board most of the time and the odd highway run, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara strong-hybrid does make a lot of sense. In heavy stop-start city traffic, it can run purely on electric power and deliver much better efficiency than the mild-hybrid.Our real-world tests revealed that the strong hybrid manages an incredible 23.77kpl in the city, while the mild-hybrid manages 11.60kpl. Highway efficiency is closer, but the strong-hybrid still wins with 20.39kpl versus the mild-hybrid’s 15.30kpl. The strong-hybrid also has better performance, which will be useful since you often travel with four people on board.That said, the upfront purchase price of the strong-hybrid is significantly higher and, even with the difference in efficiency, your limited usage means it will take a while to recover the extra cost. If you are on a tight budget, then the mild-hybrid is still a good choice. Its automatic is smooth in city traffic, and performance is adequate for most scenarios.For your city-heavy use, though, the strong-hybrid automatic lines up best.

It is easy to drive in traffic, rides well over bad roads, and is well-built, so you won’t worry about rough patches or long life.
