Hi Autocar India Team, I currently own a 2020 Maruti Suzuki Baleno Alpha and am planning to upgrade to a mid-size SUV (not a compact SUV). My usage is predominantly city driving, averaging 15-20 km per day, with occasional highway trips every 2-3 months, typically covering 500-800 km. I'm looking for a reliable, fun-to-drive petrol or strong hybrid SUV with low running costs and dependable after-sales support, as I live in a tier-2 city in Karnataka where the service network is an important consideration. In terms of features, I expect the new car to offer everything my Baleno Alpha already has, along with a few practical additions such as: TPMS, 360-degree camera, rear AC vents, spacious boot Overall good fit and finish with no gimmicky features My priorities, in order, are: Reliability, Driving experience, After-sales service, Practical features, Value for money My budget is around 16-18 lakhs. Could you please recommend the best SUV and the most value-for-money variant for my requirements?

With a budget of Rs 16-18 lakh, predominantly city driving and a focus on reliability, hassle-free ownership and a good service network, the Elevate is the best fit. Its naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine and CVT gearbox are smooth, proven and well suited to daily commuting, while Honda's reputation for reliability makes it an easy car to own over the long term. The ZX variant also gets the practical features you're looking for, including a 360-degree camera, TPMS, rear AC vents and a well-finished cabin without relying on gimmicks.

If fuel efficiency is your highest priority, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Delta Smart Hybrid AT is another strong option. It won't match the economy of the Strong Hybrid, but it still delivers impressive real-world efficiency, benefits from Maruti Suzuki's extensive service network and comfortably fits within your budget.

If you're willing to stretch your budget by a couple of lakh rupees, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Strong Hybrid is worth considering. Its hybrid powertrain is exceptionally efficient in city traffic and offers very low running costs, making it one of the more appealing hybrid cars for buyers focused on efficiency. I live in Hyderabad and am looking for a 5-seater car with a manual transmission and a minimum boot space of 470 litres. I prefer a manual because I feel automatic transmissions are more complex and could be expensive to repair in the future. Another, slightly unusual requirement is that I want a car with a reliable engine and transmission that can last 12-13 years or more, provided it receives timely engine oil changes and regular maintenance. Can anyone suggest some good manual SUV cars with an on-road price below Rs. 20 lakh?

Given your requirements for a large boot, opt for the Honda Elevate. At 458 litres the boot is under your specific measurement but is very well shaped and can easily managed a lot of cargo. Honda are known for their engines and your second requirement of a very reliable engine and gearbox will also be met with the Elevate. If you must have a minimum boot space of 470 litres consider the Renault Duster. At 518 litres the boot is the largest in the mid-size segment and the roof rails are also functional and can hold up to 50kgs so should you need even more space you can opt for a roof box, however check with your local RTO as these are not legal in many instances. If you are not looking for a very peppy drive feel, opt for the smaller 1.0 liter engine which does quite well in everyday traffic and even at steady cruising out on the highway. The engine and gearbox as well as the entire car is built tough and will last you for the 12 odd years you are looking to keeping the car, provided of course all services are done in a timely manner and the car is well looked after.

Hi, I have been driving Maruti Suzuki Swift petrol for 17 years now and am planning to buy a new car. My yearly running would be around 5000kms with 50% driving on highway and 50% driving in Tier 1 and 2 cities. My budget is 20 lakh maximum (on-road) in Bengaluru and I plan to retain the car for 10-15 years. I am too confused on NA engine petrol car due to ethanol blending issue and am inclined towards Diesel. I have shortlisted Victoris MT, Grand Vitara MT, 3XO Diesel MT and Nexon Diesel MT. I require 360-degree car camera system and sufficient boot space. I am open to all suggestions please.

The Maruti Suzuki Victoris is a good upgrade from the Swift, and is backed by Maruti's widespread network. It is a well-rounded car, but do keep in mind, it's 1.5-petrol engine is efficient and feels adequately responsive in the city, but it can feel a bit lacklustre on the highway, especially while overtaking. You could consider a Honda Elevate. It is a practical, sensible SUV with a more powerful petrol engine. Both these vehicles should serve you well over your 10-15-year ownership period.

Currently, I own a Sonet and am extremely unhappy with its poor suspension and very low mileage. My driving is mostly limited to congested areas and heavy traffic, with a daily running of around 20–22 km. I also do not have dedicated EV charging facilities, so a fully electric vehicle is not an option. Given my priorities of good mileage and a comfortable rear-seat ride without excessive wobbling or jerking, would it make sense to go for a strong hybrid such as the Toyota Hyryder or Maruti Suzuki Vitara, or would a regular Honda City be the better choice? I am particularly wondering whether spending an additional Rs 7-8 lakh on a hybrid would be justified, considering my relatively low daily usage of around 22 km. Open to all suggestions.

Go for the Honda City petrol CVT. The City’s CVT is smooth, reliable and well suited to stop-and-go traffic, and the rear seat ride is comfortable and stable, which addresses your main complaint with the Kia Sonet. The strong hybrid premium on the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara / Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is difficult to justify at your running; the fuel savings will take a very long time to recover, and the City’s petrol efficiency is good enough for your usage pattern. The City also has a proven long-term ownership track record with low running costs and a comfortable ride, which is exactly what you are looking for. If you want a slightly higher seating position and a more SUV-like feel, the Honda Elevate is a good alternative with the same engine and a similarly comfortable ride.

I currently drive a Grand i10 Manual petrol and am now planning to buy a new compact SUV that is comfortable, fuel efficient and has low maintenance. My usage is 35km of daily office commute in Delhi-NCR traffic. Please advice which option is best fit amongst Hyundai Venue HX 6T, SONET HTK+O and XUV 3XO.

Go for the Hyundai Venue. With your daily 35km commute in Delhi NCR traffic, comfort and low maintenance are key, and the Venue delivers on both. The 1.2 NA petrol is smooth, refined and easy to drive in stop-start conditions, while Hyundai’s service network and ownership experience are among the best in the segment. The HX6T variant also gives you a good balance of features without pushing the budget too far.The Sonet HTK+O is mechanically very similar, but the Venue is a newer model and offers a more spacious cabin. The XUV 3XO is also a good option, but its turbo petrol engine won't be as efficient as the Hyundai’s.Overall, the Venue is the most sensible upgrade from your Grand i10 for daily city use.

The Brezza’s 6-speed torque converter automatic is the best fit for this usage. It is smooth, reliable and well suited to stop-start conditions, and the naturally aspirated petrol engine is efficient and easy to live with. Maruti’s service reach and low maintenance costs add to the ownership peace of mind.The Sonet and Venue DCTs are good cars, but the DCT gearbox is not ideal for heavy traffic. It can feel jerky at low speeds.Alternatively, if you can arrange for home charging, the Tata Punch EV is an excellent option.
