I currently own a 2020 Maruti Wagon R 1.2 Manual and am planning to upgrade. I live in Mangalore, where bumper-to-bumper traffic is rare, so I would prefer a diesel automatic. I'm confused about whether to buy a 5-seater or a 7-seater. I feel a 5-seater like the Hyundai Venue Diesel AT might be enough, but I'm also considering the Kia Seltos. If neither seems like the right choice, the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX3 Diesel AT is my only 7-seater option. My family consists of my parents, my wife, and our two children (one is 4 years old). We manage comfortably in our Wagon R and go on long rides as well, so I'm unsure if a 7-seater is really necessary. I'm also open to considering an EV, but range is an issue during long rides. I'd appreciate suggestions on which option would be the best fit.

Go for the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX3 2.2 Diesel AT. While your family of six has been managing in the Wagon R, the safest way to travel is for everyone to have their own seat and be properly buckled in. As your children grow, the extra space of a seven-seater will become even more valuable. The XUV 7XO is an excellent long-distance car with a refined diesel engine and a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox. The facelift also introduced a more polished suspension setup, making it a big upgrade over the previous XUV700. The only drawback is that the third row is a bit cramped for adults, and its size can make it less convenient to drive in the city.

Alternatively, consider the Kia Carens Clavis. Its diesel-automatic powertrain is also refined, and its third row is more accommodating for adults than the XUV 7XO's. The other two options, the Hyundai Venue and Kia Seltos, can be ruled out simply because they are five-seaters.

Overall, the diesel automatic of this Mahindra car is the most complete upgrade for your needs, while the Carens Clavis is the better choice if a more usable third row in a smaller, city-friendly package is the priority.

This is a question from a middle-class guy in Bangalore. My dad owns a Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, which has completed 15 years and has covered around 50,000 km so far. Our family has grown, so we now need to upgrade to a 7-seater. I am looking for the best fuel-efficient 7-seater. The options I have in mind are the Tata Safari, Mahindra XUV 7XO, and Kia Carens Clavis. I have driven Maruti cars enough, so I am not considering another one. What do the experts suggest?

Go for the Kia Carens Clavis diesel automatic. It is the most sensible and well-rounded choice for your needs. Coming from the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, you will appreciate the Carens Clavis for its easy-to-drive nature, comfortable ride, and genuinely usable third row. This Kia car is also one of the most fuel-efficient 7-seaters in its segment, especially in diesel form, which is beneficial given your city driving in Bangalore and occasional highway trips. The automatic gearbox is smooth and stress-free in traffic, and despite being a proper 7-seater, the car is easy to manoeuvre. The Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV 7X0 are larger and more powerful, but they are also more expensive, less fuel-efficient, and not as easy to live with in the city. The Carens Clavis strikes the right balance between space, comfort, efficiency, and practicality, making it the best fit for a growing family looking for a long-term, hassle-free ownership experience.

Hi, I currently own a 2016 Maruti Suzuki Ertiga VDI SHVS and a Honda Jazz i-VTEC. I’m planning to sell both cars and buy a new one. My budget is between Rs. 20 lakh and Rs. 28 lakh (on-road). The cars I’m considering are the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Scorpio N, and Thar Roxx. However, I’m a little concerned about Mahindra’s service quality. I ruled out the Toyota Innova Crysta because I don’t think it offers enough value for the price. My father also does not prefer the Tata Safari, as its third row is not very usable. The Tata Harrier is also on my list, but I’m concerned about Tata’s service quality. My usage is mixed. Is there a better option available in this price range?

Based on your requirements, the Mahindra XUV 7XO is the most sensible choice. It offers a good balance of space, comfort and performance, and is a significant step up from both your Ertiga and Jazz. The Scorpio N is a more rugged, body-on-frame SUV and is better suited to rough roads and occasional off-roading, but it is not as comfortable as the XUV 7XO for everyday use. It is a similar story with the Thar Roxx which is more of a lifestyle vehicle.Mahindra service has made significant improvements in recent years and service quality is now largely dependent on the dealership. It is worth checking the reputation of your local dealer before making a decision. The Toyota Innova Crysta is still the benchmark for reliability and long-term ownership, but it is expensive for what it offers and does not feel as modern or feature-rich as the XUV 7XO. Alternatively, consider the Kia Carens Clavis diesel. The engine is refined, it is premium inside, and the third row is better than the 7XO or Safari, though it lacks their SUV-like appeal. Kia service is also amongst the best in the country. Overall, the XUV 7XO is the best fit for your needs and budget.
