The Astor’s outward-radiating chrome grille, LED headlamps, and sporty touches like red brake calipers give it visual flair. Still, its crossover-like stance lacks the road presence SUV buyers often desire, despite being dimensionally larger than the Creta.

This is where the Astor truly shines. The cabin feels premium, with soft-touch materials, high-quality switchgear, and a striking red interior option. The front seats are wide and cushy, rear space is decent for two adults, though three abreast is tight. Boot space (359 litres) is usefully shaped, and the 60:40 rear split adds flexibility.

The 1,349cc three-cylinder turbo-petrol impresses with its refinement. It’s quiet at idle and cruise, only getting mildly vocal when pushed. Acceleration is brisk — 0-100kph in 10.23 seconds, top speed 183kph — but the relaxed power delivery doesn’t make it feel particularly sporty.
The 6-speed torque converter feels smooth and CVT-like with gentle throttle inputs but delays downshifts when you demand quick overtakes. The absence of paddle shifters is missed. A unique trait is the slight momentum-holding after lifting off the accelerator, which softens deceleration but takes some getting used to.

Fuel efficiency is a weak spot, with real-world figures, especially in city driving, often fall into single digits, making the Astor one of the less efficient options in its class.

The Astor prioritizes comfort, with its soft suspension soaking up bumps with finesse. However, it feels floaty at higher speeds and exhibits noticeable body roll around corners. Steering modes alter weight but not feedback, and the ‘Urban’ setting suits the car’s easygoing nature. Braking performance is decent — 80-0kph in 26.24m — with a progressive pedal feel.

The Astor is generously equipped — ADAS Level 2 tech, panoramic sunroof, digital cluster, AI assistant, 360° camera, and wireless charging, among others. Updates like ventilated seats have improved the package further.
Key ADAS features include adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane keeping assist, autonomous emergency braking, and intelligent speed assist. While not flawless in operation, they enhance safety and could be lifesaving.

The MG Astor stands out with its refined drivetrain and premium cabin. It’s ideal for those seeking a calm, comfortable, and tech-rich midsize SUV. However, it doesn’t appeal to enthusiasts or those prioritizing efficiency or SUV-like road presence. That said, its solid build quality and upmarket interior make it feel like money well spent. With prices ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 17.55 lakh, the Astor is well worth shortlisting.
