As he has done multiple times before this season, Marc Marquez emerged victorious at the 2025 Italian GP. He disrupted Francesco Bagnaia’s winning streak here and scored his 93rd victory from his 100th pole position. Alex Marquez finished second, and Fabio Di Giannantonio overtook Bagnaia on the second last lap to finish on the last step of the podium.

  1. Marc’s victory disrupts Bagnaia’s undefeated Mugello winning streak
  2. Bagnaia now 110 points behind Marc in the standings
  3. Alex Marquez has finished P2 thirteen times so far this season

Marquez-Bagnaia have heated battle in opening laps

Bagnaia was unable to match the Marquez brothers’ pace over the race distance

Unlike the Sprint race, where Marc didn’t get a perfect start and dropped to P8, the main race saw the elder Marquez brother get a superb launch from pole position. However, for the first five laps, Marquez and his teammate Bagnaia were engaged in a fierce battle for the race lead. These few opening laps gave fans a glimpse of Bagnaia at his competitive best – something that has so far been missing on track – and he appeared to give Marquez a run for his money.

So close was their battle that, at one point, even Alex Marquez took the lead and stayed there for a couple of laps. Eventually, Marc overtook his brother for the number one spot, and once he got clear track in front of him, he was as good as gone for the remainder of the race.

As has been the case for much of 2025, Bagnaia was unable to match the pace of the Marquez brothers ahead of him and was relegated to third place after the heated battle with Marc was over. VR46 rider Fabio Di Giannantonio had excellent late-race pace and was able to get the best of two-time World Champion Bagnaia to seal the final spot on the podium – also helped by the Morbidelli-Vinales skirmish. This marks Diggia’s second appearance on the podium after the 2025 Americas MotoGP race

Morbidelli wipes out Vinales, given long lap penalty

Vinales was leading KTM rider when he crashed out

Of the two VR46 Ducati racers, it was actually Franco Morbidelli who was running in fourth place, ahead of his teammate Di Giannantonio. The pair of them trailed by the Tech3 KTM of Maverick Vinales. Once the Bagnaia-Marquez battle settled down, Vinales (who was the leading KTM rider at this point in the race) made a move on Morbidelli, overtaking him using the RC16’s outright top-speed advantage down Mugello’s long back straight.

Morbidelli retaliated straightaway and managed to pinch the inside line from Vinales in a matter of a few corners. However, when Morbidelli overtook Vinales, he nudged the latter – who was leaning over considerably – which put an end to the race of the KTM rider. This forced the race direction to give the Italian rider a long-lap penalty, which Morbidelli had to take twice on account of not being inside the white lines on his first try. Ultimately, this mistake cost Morbidelli dearly, and his teammate was able to capitalise on it and finish on the podium.

2025 MotoGP standings

Marquez now 110 points clear of Bagnaia

Championship leader Marc Marquez continues to add to his already hefty haul of points in 2025 with his victory in both the Sprint and main races in Italy. Alex Marquez, who has now finished second thirteen times this season, is second in the standings. Francesco Bagnaia’s deficit to the Marquez brothers continues to grow, as he is unable to match their pace so far this season. The next race will be the famous Dutch TT, to be held at the TT circuit Assen in the Netherlands next weekend – June 27-29.
