I am looking to upgrade from a 2018 Ertiga VXI CNG to a petrol AT 7-seater for daily Mumbai city use majorly. I have shortlisted the MG Hector Plus Savvy Pro AT, Tata Safari Adventure X Petrol AT, XUV 7XO AX7 Petrol AT and Innova HyCross GXO (non-hybrid). Which one is the best option for long-term use, comfort for a large family of five, reliability and decent mileage?
Since mileage is a concern, the Toyota Innova HyCross will be ruled out here. The Hycross hybrid is a lot better, but the non-hybrid version is good for 7kpl at best, which isn't the best figure. The MG Hector Plus, Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV 7XO are good and tech-laden, but the third row space is best for kids and short drives for adults.
A good option to consider would be the Kia Carens Clavis. The Clavis is an MPV that is high on practicality and comfort, and gets multiple powertrain options and lots of features. The third row is spacious and close to the Ertiga in terms of roominess, thereby even adults can travel in comfort. The ride quality is good, and the turbo-petrol engine has enough punch even with a full load. The Clavis is also high on features, and it will be the best choice among all the rest.

Hi Autocar Team, I am looking to buy a 7-seater car with a budget of ₹15-20 lakh on-road. My monthly driving is around 1,500 km. We are a family of 4 adults and 2 children, and it is becoming a bit uncomfortable for six people in my current Honda Elevate VX MT. Could you suggest a suitable model and variant within my budget? Also, does it make sense to choose an automatic transmission for my usage?
The Kia Carens Clavis is the best 7 seater within your budget. It's well packaged interior provides ample space for seven passengers and access to the third row is convenient. Also, the sliding middle row lets you balance space for last row occupants.
The Carens Clavis also boasts a well finished interior and a long list of standard safety features.
The automatic options on offer include a 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with a dual-clutch auto gearbox and a 115hp, 1.5-litre turbo-diesel with a torque converter auto. The turbo-petrol offers stronger performance which you will appreciate on highway drives and with a full load of passengers. The turbo-diesel delivers reasonable performance but is the more fuel efficient choice.

Looking for a seven-seater car that would be of good quality and safety, with good comfort for both the driver and passengers, along with good mileage and power. Budget under ₹15 lakh. Daily travel of 50 km and a weekly 250 km trip to my native place.
You can consider the Kia Carens Clavis. It is a good-quality car with a very nice and premium interior, and the dashboard and all the switchgear feel well-built. It is also very comfortable and spacious, and even the third row is spacious enough and has dedicated AC vents as well as Type-C USB charging ports.
In terms of safety, the Clavis comes well-equipped with six airbags, ABS and ESP as standard. Within your budget, you would get a mid-spec petrol or, if you are very concerned about running cost then opt for the base diesel.

Hi Autocar Team, I have three children and parents in my family, and I have decided to purchase the Kia Carens Clavis. My daily commute is about 35 km in the city, and I usually take a 300 km highway trip once a month. I have been driving a diesel car since 2011, but I am now unsure whether to choose the petrol naturally aspirated (NA) variant or the diesel variant of the Carens Clavis. Considering my usage pattern and family requirements, which engine option would you suggest?
Since you don't drive much, paying a premium for a Kia Carens Clavis diesel version doesn't make much sense. Yes, diesel is more efficient, but to offset the initial premium, you will have to drive considerably more.
Hence, we recommend the naturally aspirated petrol engine. The 115hp engine has enough power for city driving and holds its own on the highway. The manual gearbox is smooth, the clutch is light, and overall, it is an easy car to drive.
The HTE (O) gets you a decently appointed cabin with a touchscreen infotainment system, sunroof, rear AC vents, and more.
The third row is spacious for adults, and the middle-row seat height is ideal for the elderly to get in and out.

I own a Ford EcoSport and have had it for the past 10 years. Now I want to upgrade. I would like to go for a 7-seater petrol automatic. I want the best value-for-money 7-seater that can be used for the next 10 to 15 years with a reliable engine. I am not sure whether to choose a DSG, torque converter or CVT automatic transmission, but I want a trouble-free and smooth automatic transmission that works well even in bumper-to-bumper traffic. My usage would be 70% city and 30% highways. Safety is also equally important. Third-row occupancy should also be easy and spacious. Please suggest a car.
Since you have not mentioned your budget, it is difficult to recommend one specific car. However, based on your requirements, here are two strong options in different price brackets that would feel like a clear upgrade from your Ford EcoSport.
In the more affordable premium space, the Kia Carens Clavis suits your requirements well. It offers a spacious cabin and is comfortable across all three rows, which makes it a genuinely usable seven-seater. The interiors feel premium, it comes well-equipped with features, and the ride quality is comfortable for both city and highway use. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with the 7-speed DCT offers strong performance and has enough power even with a full load. In bumper-to-bumper traffic, it can occasionally feel slightly jerky, which is typical of DCT gearboxes, but in everyday use, it is not really a deal breaker.
If your budget allows and you want the most comfortable, the Toyota Innova HyCross Hybrid is an excellent option. It is a full-size MPV with generous space in all three rows. The hybrid powertrain uses an e-CVT, which feels extremely smooth in city traffic and being a strong hybrid, it also delivers strong efficiency for a vehicle of this size. The ride quality is comfortable, and it performs well on highways, too. The only areas where it could be better are sound insulation, as some road noise enters the cabin, and the interior quality, which feels a bit average for its price.

I have been using Maruti cars for more than 30 years and have been using the Ertiga Hybrid for the last 6.5 years. I now need to change from the Ertiga to a good 7-seater car, preferably not the Kia Carens, etc., and around the same budget as the Ertiga. The average should also be similar. Since you've been a Maruti loyalist and don't want to consider the excellent Kia Carens Clavis at all, the only options you have are to either get another Maruti Suzuki Ertiga or opt for the Maruti XL6, which is essentially a 6-seater Ertiga with black interiors, some added features and a body cladding to visually give it a rugged look. Unfortunately, there are no other car-like, spacious 7-seaters in the market that price point.

The Kia Carens Clavis is the best 7 seater within your budget of Rs 15 lakh. It's a well-packaged MPV that offers good seating space in all three rows. Access to the third row is convenient, while the middle row's slide function makes it easy to maximise legroom or balance space for third row passengers, as needed.
The Carens Clavis is available with petrol, turbo-petrol and turbo-diesel engines. The base petrol offers reasonable performance and is suitable if the bulk of your driving will be in town. The turbo-petrol engine adds more power and performance. The turbo-diesel engine works well on highway cruises and is the most efficient powertrain.

Hi, I am planning to buy a Kia Carens Clavis DCT. I currently own a Hyundai Venue Turbo Petrol(O) manual transmission, but I want to know whether the Kia Carens Clavis turbo-petrol DCT will be reliable for long-term ownership (10-15 years). I have heard that turbo DCT gearboxes tend to heatup in heavy traffic. Please guide me, is the turbo DCT suitable for mixed driving conditions (city traffic and highways)? What is your suggestion regarding the Tata Safari / XUV 7XO automatic variant?
The Kia Carens Clavis is a good option, and while DCTs are considered more maintenance-intensive than torque converter automatics, Kia and Hyundai’s units have proven to be more reliable than older Volkswagen gearboxes that were prone to failure. It’s true that stop-and-go traffic increases wear and tear on a DCT’s clutch pack; however, in the mixed conditions you mentioned, it should be quite reliable.
If you still have concerns about long-term transmission durability, the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV 7XO both use torque converter automatics, which offer smoother shifts and are generally more robust. Of the two, our pick would be the Mahindra XUV 7XO, as it offers better performance, a more feature-packed cabin, and superb ride quality.

I am planning to buy a Kia Carens Clavis in diesel MT in the next few weeks. I am confused between HTE EX Diesel MT and HTK+ (O) Diesel MT. My annual running is approximately 18,000 km, and I take 4-5 trips (ranging from 800-2,200 km). I want a sunroof for my kids, but the HTE EX variant misses out on cruise control, which I feel is important for frequent highway drives. My budget is ₹18 lakh on-road. Should I stretch my budget for the HTK+ (O), or buy the HTE EX and get cruise control retrofitted? Is it safe and practical to do so?
Since you frequently travel on highways, cruise control would definitely be an added convenience. Getting cruise control retrofitted is not advised, as it involves critical electronics and sensors, and it's best to rely on factory-fitment for such features. There is also a high chance of your warranty getting lapsed and even issues in insurance claims in case there is an incident.
We would recommend stretching your budget and getting the Kia Carens Clavis HTK+(O) since it comes standard with cruise control and will be a lot better on highway trips. The extra features would be nicer to have too.
