The Blade battery is also known for its safety, having passed the nail penetration test, in which a nail is driven through the battery to simulate an internal short circuit. During the test, it neither emitted smoke nor caught fire, with its surface temperature remaining at around 60degC, compared to over 500degC for a conventional lithium-ion battery, according to the company. BYD also says the Blade battery withstood extreme tests, including crushing, bending, heating to 300degC and a 260 percent overcharge without catching fire or exploding.

There is always plenty of torque under your right foot, and what’s nice is that responses aren’t exaggerated or sudden. The steering is easy to twirl and has just the right amount of weight, the accelerator is nicely sprung.

The BYD Atto 3 feels silent, well insulated and rides comfortably. The suspension feels pliant over rough patches and regular bumps, and it rides in a comfortable and relaxed manner. Larger potholes do upset its composure and there's some amount of thudding, but ride quality overall is good. The EV also feels stable at speed.

BYD claims an ARAI-rated 521km range for the Atto 3. In real-world, a range of 400km can be expected, which should be adequate for highway runs.

The first thing you'll notice inside the Atto 3 is its unique cabin design. The dashboard and door pads feature several unusual design elements, such as guitar string-inspired door pockets, a soft fabric strip across the dashboard and retro-style air vents. Some features, like the aircraft-style gear selector, steering wheel and quirky door handles, add to the cabin's character and feel premium. However, some of the buttons around the steering wheel and centre console feel less solid, and the lower dashboard plastics aren't as premium as the rest of the interior.

The Atto 3 has no frunk under the bonnet.

The Atto 3 has a boot capacity of 440 litres, and the cube-like enclosure is quite practical.

The BYD Atto 3 comes as a full import to India, which places it in a higher price bracket than rivals. Still, if smooth, refined driving manners are what you are looking for, if you like its sense of individual style, the Atto 3 could be the EV you are looking for.

The mid-spec BYD Atto 3 Premium variant is the one we recommend, as it gets the larger 60.48kWh battery pack that, according to ARAI, delivers a healthy driving range of 521km. It packs a decent list of features as well.
