BMW iX expert review
The iX’s look is bold but divisive. The oversized kidney ‘grilles’, slim headlamps and gloss-black bumper inserts are dramatic, while new 22-inch wheels suit its extroverted stance. Flat doors and flush handles feel futuristic, and the minimalist rear, with ultra-slim LED tail-lamps and sculpted tailgate, completes the look. It doesn’t resemble any other BMW or SUV on sale, and for many, that’ll be a key attraction.

The cabin is equally unconventional, with a minimalist, pushed-back dashboard opening up the forward view. Materials are bright and quirky but feel expensive. The dual curved screens look superb, and aside from a few bits of switchgear, little is shared with other BMWs. The unique front seats are hugely comfortable, and the sofa-like rear bench wraps around passengers, offering excellent cushioning, generous space and surprising shoulder support in corners.

Power is up to 523hp, with 765Nm of torque, cutting 0-100kph to a blistering 4.5 seconds. It feels explosively quick, particularly in rolling acceleration. B mode amplifies this ferocity and is best left alone for daily driving. The xDrive50’s sheer pace transforms the iX, making it one of the quickest SUVs you can buy.

A larger 111.5kWh (105.2kWh net) battery boosts range to a WLTP-certified 635km. In our real-world city and highway test, it managed 504km — comfortably ahead of rivals and 148km more than the xDrive40. It now supports 195kW DC fast charging, up from 150kW, significantly cutting down charging times.

Standard air suspension improves bandwidth between comfort and firmness, though 22-inch wheels compromise bump absorption. The iX still feels heavy in corners, and while it rides well, it lacks the handling precision of BMW’s other big SUVs.

The xDrive50 is loaded with kit. There’s a sharp dual-screen setup, though the new iDrive system can feel overcomplicated, with many controls buried in menus. Other highlights include a panoramic glass roof, heads-up display, adaptive air suspension, 655W Harman Kardon audio, ambient lighting, 4-zone climate control, wireless charging, soft-close doors, heated and ventilated front seats, connected tech, 360-degree camera with park assist, and 8 airbags.

At Rs 1.40 crore, it’s now the priciest electric SUV in the class, tied with Mercedes’ EQS SUV 580. Yet, with standout range, features, comfort and pace, it stays one of the most appealing luxury EVs you can buy.
