Exterior Design And Engineering

8.0

The all-electric i7 is loud—not in sound, but in look. Split headlamps and a massive kidney grille mark a bold departure for BMW design. You may love it or hate it, but you certainly won’t ignore it. Swarovski crystals in the DRLs, a contrast-finished bumper and an LED-outlined grille (‘Iconic Glow’) add more drama.
In profile, the i7 sticks to tradition with a three-box form and subtle blue accents to set it apart as the EV. A high deck boot, sleek tail-lamps and diffuser-like elements add character to the rear.

Interior Space And Comfort

9.0

The i7’s twin-screen curved display is shared with other BMWs, but the overall cabin feels every bit a flagship. Leather everywhere, crystal-effect trim on key touchpoints, and the illuminated ‘Interaction Bar’ dial up the luxury. Hidden AC vents lend a clean look.
The rear is where the i7 truly shines. Legroom is vast, and the seats pamper with ventilation, massage and heating. The ‘boss seat’ extends to form a lounge-like setup, though a few more degrees of recline would’ve helped. The middle seat isn’t ideal due to contours and the high centre tunnel.
There’s 500 litres of boot space and an underfloor compartment, but no frunk as you’d expect on an EV.

Performance And Refinement

9.0

The i7 eDrive 50’s twin motors deliver 544hp and 745Nm, enabling a 4.57sec 0-100kph time. Power delivery is progressive and confidence-inspiring, with a Boost mode for instant pushback. Hans Zimmer-composed drive sounds add theatre.

If you want even more go, there’s the option of 650hp i7 xDrive M70.

Mileage / Range And Efficiency

8.0

A 101.7kWh battery yields 396km in the city and 489km on the highway on the eDrive 50. DC charging is supported up to 195kW, but most owners will rely on the 22kW AC charger (5hr full charge).

Ride Comfort And Handling

9.0

Adaptive air suspension offers a plush ride with minimal noise. At high speeds, the i7 feels composed and stable. The i7’s size demands attention in town even with four-wheel steer. Ground clearance is limited at 136mm, though a lift function helps over speed breakers.

Features And Safety

10.0

Powered doors welcome you, and inside, there’s no shortage of wow. The 14.9-inch touchscreen is slick, paired with a 12.3-inch digital cluster that includes AR graphics. Ambient lighting themes enhance the vibe.
Rear door touchscreens control seat and blind settings, while a 31.3-inch 8K screen folds down from the roof, though not everyone will enjoy screen time on the move. The Bowers & Wilkins audio setup is exceptional.

ADAS features include emergency braking, lane-keep assist and auto cruise. Parking tech is top-notch too, with 360-degree cameras and a handy Manoeuvre Assistant that’ll guide the i7 into a tricky parking slot.

Value For Money

9.0

At Rs 1.95 crore, the i7 is expensive, especially versus the locally assembled Mercedes EQS. But as a tech-rich, electric flagship, the i7 delivers luxury with presence—boldly and brilliantly.

Hi Autocar Team, I wanted your guidance on whether I should buy the new Lexus ES 350h Hybrid or wait for the upcoming BMW i5 LWB. My concern with the BMW i5 LWB is that it is likely to be one of the last models based on BMW's current platform, with the Neue Klasse-based i5 expected to arrive in the near future. Given how quickly EV technology is evolving, I am worried that it could become outdated relatively soon. On the other hand, the Lexus ES 350h is based on Toyota's sixth-generation hybrid technology, which makes me feel it may remain relevant for longer within its segment. That said, the idea of switching to an EV is also very exciting, so I am finding it difficult to decide. Which one would you recommend?

The new i5 LWB is expected to be a thorough revision of the current model based on the CLAR platform, with Neue Klasse-inspired styling and perhaps battery and motor updates, rather than an outright shift to the Neue Klasse platform of the i3. This is similar to what was done with the BMW i7, which also shares the CLAR platform, as both are only halfway through their life cycles. Besides, that is still some time away, and the only i5 you can buy now is the sporty (and low-slung) M60. You're right about rapidly advancing EV tech, but whether you choose today's i5 or the incoming LCI or LWB, you'll still have a luxurious, comfortable, refined and powerful EV.As for the Lexus, if you're choosing the hybrid, know that it is about half the price of what the i5 LWB will likely cost. There is also the ES Electric, which is closer in price and concept to the i5. Either way, the ES seems like the better choice for you if you plan to purchase today, since as you mentioned, it is presently the more contemporary option. That said, depending on which camp you fall into, a hybrid may already be behind in terms of relevance compared to any EV, so it really comes down to the nature of your usage. For now, in India, pound for pound, a hybrid makes more sense than an EV, so if you're keen on the new ES hybrid, you should go for it.
