Porsche has begun official trials of three all-electric Porsche Boxsters in Germany.

Each version of the three Boxster E prototypes, described by Porsche as “mobile laboratories”, is powered by a 29kWh battery pack and a pair of electric motors with a combined power output of 241bhp.

No performance figures for the prototypes have been released, but Porsche says they are comparable to a Boxster S. That car is good for 0-62mph in 5.3sec and a top speed of 273.5kph.

Porsche currently has no firm production plans for the Boxster E, but will use the data and feedback from the trials in the development of its future models.
