Sergio Pininfarina, honorary chairman of the Pininfarina Group, passed away last night at home in Turin at the age of 85.

After working in his family business for 16 years, Pininfarina took over chairmanship of the company following his father’s death in 1966. Over the course of his chairmanship, he presided over a host of high profile collaborations, including Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Fiat, Maserati, Vauxhall and Peugeot. More recently, in 2005, he was appointed Life Senator.

Sergio Pininfarina oversaw the construction of the firm’s facilities in Grugliasco, an R&D centre, Italy’s first wind tunnel, and the company’s floatation on the Italian stock exchange. In 1987, he established an industrial design centre, marking the brand’s ambitions beyond automotive design.

His is survived by his wife Giorgia and sons Lorenza and Paolo.
