After the launch of the E-class, Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to bring out its next-gen GLE SUV that is based on the same all-new MRA platform.

Our sister publication Autocar UK has revealed that the next high-performance Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 is expected to use AMG's twin-turbocharged 'hot vee' V8 engine, replacing the current generation’s older 5.5-litre unit.

The 4.0-litre V8 is good for 585hp and is more efficient than the 5.5-litre motor. It is also used on cars like the AMG GT R. The GLE 63 will rival the BMW X5 M.

The next-gen GLEs will feature a new design for the nose, a more prominent bonnet and new headlights. The grille itself is expected to remain unchanged.

The largest changes can be seen in the fitment of new wheel arch lips that give the SUV a rugged stance, suggesting a wider front and rear track. The shorter front overhang suggests a longer wheelbase. The rear window also seems to have a steeper rake while the tail-lamps are also expected to be refreshed.

Concerning the powertrains for the non-AMG range, an updated list of turbocharged four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, as well as a new hybrid option, are expected.

The current gen GLE is available in India in 250d and 350d guises. While there is also the GLE 400 petrol variant on offer, a high-performance trim is not on sale. Like the current model, the next-gen GLE will rival the likes of the 2018 Porsche Macan and the facelifted Range Rover Sport.
