Lamborghini has presented a one-off, special edition Huracan to Pope Francis, meant to be auctioned off for charity.

The special edition supercar pays homage to the Vatican by being painted in livery that is based on the city-state’s flag. The Italian firm’s Ad Personam customisation department finished the Huracan in Bianco Monocerus, with a Giallo Tiberino decoration.

Handed over to the pope by Lamborghini boss Stefano Domenicali at the Vatican, the supercar was blessed and signed by the religious leader and will be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s in May 2018.

The proceeds raised by auctioning the one-off Huracan will be donated to the pope, who is expected to divide the amount between causes such as aiding the Christian community in Iraq’s Nineveh Plain, the Pope John XXIII Community that helps victims of trafficking and abuse and Italian associations that aid women and children in Africa.

Pope Francis is thought to prefer more humble cars than the Lamborghini he was presented with. He reportedly preferred to use public transport when he was a cardinal but is known to have driven a 984 Renault 4 that he was previous given. He has also used a Ford Focus from the Vatican car pool for trips outside Italy. On his visits to the USA in 2015, he used a Fiat 500L and Jeep Wrangler as transport.
