The Indian subsidiary of Korean carmaker Hyundai today rolled out its seven-millionth car, eighteen years after it first began commercial operations in the country. The car, an automatic Creta SUV, was rolled out from the Sriperumbudur plant in Chennai.

The carmaker now aims to touch volumes of 10 million units within the first half of 2021, Y.K Koo, managing director and CEO, Hyundai Motor India Limited said.

Hyundai says it has crossed the one million production milestone at an average of every 18 months. The millionth car – a Santro – rolled out in 2006, eight years after commencement of commercial production in 1998. Thereafter, production picked up momentum, with the next million milestone coming up within an average of 18 -19 months.

Only recently Hyundai crossed the milestone of selling 50,000 cars per month, selling 50,016 units in October, up 6.4 percent from the same period last year. It crossed the milestone within 15 months of its earlier 40,000 unit milestone.
