Following the unveil of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe SUV at the New York motor show 2016, it has been revealed that senior members of the German carmaker’s engineering team would like the company to build a convertible version of the car to rival the drop-top Range Rover Evoque.

Speaking to our sister publication Autocar UK, Michael Kelz, chief engineer for the GLC, CLS and new E-Class, said the rise in popularity of drop-top SUVs made the development of a GLC Cabriolet viable and that he was a fan of the Evoque Convertible.

“It would be fun, and it’s actually not that much of an engineering challenge,” he said.

However, Kelz also added that a lack of space in the Mercedes line-up at present meant that another model from the range would have to be axed for the GLC Cabriolet to be built.

The GLC Coupe, which would be the donor car, is a sleeker, more sporty take on the Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV.
