What do a Ferrari 348, Mercedes-Benz W124 E-Class and a Mazda Miata MX-5 have in common? Sure, they are as contrasting as cars can get, but in truth, they’re all modern classics! It’s to celebrate this very section of cars that we’re announcing the first-ever Turtle Wax Modern Classic Rally powered by Autocar India. The Young Classics Car Rally will partner with Shaman Youngtimers and showcase motoring icons launched between the 1970s and the early 2000s.

What is a modern classic car?

They are cars that are around 30 years old, however, not all cars fall within the universally accepted criteria for a modern classic. There are certain exceptions based on the rarity and type of car, like for example the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is also widely considered a modern classic. A conversation with Perseus Bandrawalla, curator of India’s most sought after classic car event, the Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Rally, brings the modern classic phenomenon into perspective. “Modern Classic cars are rapidly gaining popularity with enthusiasts and collectors who like individuality. Unlike with traditional vintage and classic cars, modern classics are very usable as daily cars and still exude a charm that appeals to all generations. For instance, a modern classic car could be carburetted or fuel-injected, with manual or power-assisted steering. The whole premise of modern classic cars is nostalgia. These are cars people want to associate with because they’ve grown up seeing them or driving them and not just because of their classic value... modern classics are more personal.”

Quizzed on the growing popularity of modern classics around the world, Perseus said, “As a pattern, modern classics, also known as young classics, are cars that represent a pinnacle of engineering of their time. Be it their heightened mechanical feel, dynamics, naturally aspirated engine performance or even electronic and aerodynamic innovations this generation of cars brought about, modern classics are popular with those equally interested in mechanicals and restoration, as with enthusiastic driving. The idea is to preserve history without contaminating it and keeping the original driving characteristics of the car.

Dominated globally by German cars, although certainly not limited to them, some of the modern classic benchmarks include the BMW E30, Mercedes-Benz W123 and W126 series, the R129 SL-Class, Porsche 993, Ferrari 355, and even recent examples such as the Honda S2000 and Mazda Miata (MX-5).

While more details on the rally will emerge closer to the date, the itinerary is expected to involve a congregation at Sofitel BKC, followed by a parade that is certain to wow spectators, eventually concluding in a post-drive gathering at the same venue, to be hosted in compliance with the necessary social distancing norms.
