In an era where global warming is forcing car manufacturers to rethink their tendency of plonking powerful, fuel-guzzling monster engines, it is becoming increasingly difficult for petrolheads to savour the thrill of a 700bhp V12 engine. Lamborghini, however, seems to think that it’s possible to have your cake and eat it too.

For 2013, Lamborghini will introduce a multi-cylinder deactivation system as well as an engine start-stop technology for the Aventador LP 700-4, helping to boost its fuel efficiency without sacrificing power when demanded.

Thanks to the new system, the V12 is capable of shutting down six cylinders during cruising modes, while the start-stop system allows the engine to conserve fuel during idle. The system features a capacitor rather than a battery for engine re-ignition, which equates to approximately three kilos in weight saving. Combined, the new 2013 model Aventador is expected to attain 6.2kpl, compared to the current model's 5.8kpl. Also, CO2 emissions are expected to drop from 398g/km to 370g/km.
