The new Mercedes C-class Coupé has been revealed prior to its debut at the Frankfurt motor show to be held this September. It is the more striking and svelte sibling of the C-class sedan. Like the sedan that borrows quite a few elements from the S-class, the C Coupé too gets more than its fair share from the flagship’s coupé version.
The new coupé looks more muscular than the outgoing model and that’s mainly due to the increase in dimensions. Based on the latest evolution of the Mercedes-Benz MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform, the new C-class Coupé is 95mm longer, 40mm wider, and the wheelbase has grown by 80mm.
Prominent design elements include the shapely headlights with the daytime-running lamps, the predominant diamond grille, the swooping roofline and the stubby rear.
On the inside, the dashboard is similar to the one on the sedan version; that means it gets the same stylish appearance, and high-quality materials. The fit and finish throughout the cabin is good as well. Features, subject to trim levels, include keyless entry, the latest COMAND system with a large screen, and a panoramic sunroof.
Mercedes has also equipped the C-class Coupé with a number of safety and assistance systems like the Collision Prevention System, which works with brake assist (up to 200kph), Attention Assist (to warn the driver of drowsiness), Active Lane Keeping assist (car steers autonomously to stay in lane), and a 360-degree camera.
Engine options for the new C-class Coupé will include a 156bhp 1.6-litre petrol mill in the entry-level C 180, a 184bhp 2.0-litre petrol in the C 200, a 211bhp 2.0 petrol in the C 250 and a 245bhp 2.0 petrol in the C 300. The diesel engines will be a 168bhp 2.1-litre four-cylinder unit in the C 220d, and a 201bhp 2.1 diesel in the C 250d. Transmission duties will be held by either a six-speed manual, seven-speed automatic or a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Alongside the standard rear-wheel drive, the C-class Coupé will also be available with the option of the 4Matic four-wheel drive.
Set to go on sale in global markets this October, the C-class Coupé will take on rivals like the Audi A5 and BMW's 4-series.
