BYD Seal U SUV: what is it?

The Seal U SUV is already sold in China as the BYD Song, and its Geneva Motor Show showcase confirms BYD’s plans to introduce it in the European market. This is also the first plug-in hybrid vehicle from BYD for Europe. The Seal U SUV is 4,775mm long, 1,890mm wide and 1,670mm tall, which makes it significantly larger than the Seal sedan.

BYD Seal U SUV: powertrain options

In China, the Seal U is available with an electric and a PHEV powertrain, and these will be offered in other global markets too. The EV comes with either a 71kWh or an 87kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, with claimed range of 520km and 605km, respectively (Chinese CLTC test cycle). The Seal U EV gets two electric motors with two power outputs: 207hp and 221hp, with a top speed of 175kph for the entry-level variant.

Meanwhile, the PHEV comes with a 107hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine, and a 197hp electric motor mated to a CVT. An 18.3kWh battery offers around 110km of electric-only range and can be charged from 30-80 percent in around 35 minutes. It also comes with vehicle-to-load charging capability as standard.
