BMW has introduced the updated M2 sports coupe with an optional M xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. This AWD setup yields a slightly faster 0-100kph acceleration time and comes only with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Moreover, the M2’s engine now gets BMW’s patented M Ignite technology that reduces fuel consumption under higher loads.

The optional M xDrive system on board is rear-wheel-drive biased and sends power to the front wheels if the rear wheels lose grip. BMW says this AWD tech adds stability for driving in all weather conditions, and its behaviour can be fine-tuned to suit customer preferences via the M Setup menu on the infotainment system. The setup also includes the option to fully turn off stability control and enable 2WD mode, which sends power exclusively to the rear wheels.

Powering the M2 M xDrive is the same 480hp, 600Nm 3.0-litre straight-six engine that powers the standard rear-wheel-drive M2. However, the xDrive enables a 0.3-second quicker 0-100kph time of 3.7 seconds compared to the standard M2. Top speed is limited to 250kph, with the optional M Driver’s Package extending it to 285kph.

Additionally, the 2026 M2’s engine gets BMW’s patented M Ignite technology, which adds a small pre-combustion chamber above the main cylinder. Under high load, a spark plug ignites the fuel first, and the mini-explosion transfers it to the main combustion chamber, so less fuel is consumed as it burns more efficiently. BMW says this allows for longer track days.

On the outside, the M2 with M xDrive does not get any design changes over the standard model. The familiar sports-coupe silhouette with a long bonnet and a short rear end is retained. You continue to get 19-inch and 20-inch rims for the front and rear wheels, respectively. Muscular rear haunches, flared wheel arches and a wide stance give it definition. However, BMW has introduced a new Borusan Turkish Blue paint option for the 2026 M2.

The interior is a familiar affair with a dual-screen setup for the digital driver’s display and infotainment screen. There’s M branding for the flat-bottom steering wheel, M-specific graphics for the infotainment system and M tricolour trim for the door pads. Lightweight carbon bucket seats are also offered.
