India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, has announced that its Ciaz midsize sedan has achieved a sales figure of over 46,000 units for FY19. With this, the Ciaz remains the bestselling midsize sedan for a third consecutive year with a market share of 30 percent. However, sales were down 21 percent over the 58,913 units dispatched during FY18.
Key rival Honda City ended the fiscal with sales of 41,072 units (down 27 percent), followed by the Hyundai Verna which went home to 39,568 customers (up 10 percent). Others in the midsize sedan segment include the new Toyota Yaris (11,831 units), the Skoda Rapid (10,457 units, down 8 percent) and the Volkswagen Vento (5,871 units, down 19 percent).
As per Maruti, the top-spec Alpha variants of the Ciaz account for 48 percent of the sales. Additionally, the signature Nexa blue Ciaz models contribute to over 31 percent of its total sales. Since its introduction in 2014, Maruti Suzuki has cumulatively sold over 2.56 lakh units of the midsize sedan.
The updated Maruti Suzuki Ciaz was launched in August 2018, with an all-new, 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine which produces 104hp and 138Nm. The engine can be had with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox and it features the brand’s smart hybrid tech as well.
Maruti also introduced the new, in-house-developed, 1.5-litre diesel engine on the Ciaz, which puts out 95hp and 225Nm of torque. The new diesel motor comes paired to an all-new, 6-speed manual gearbox which gives it an ARAI-rated fuel economy of 26.82kpl. The new diesel, however, misses out on the hybrid tech of the older 1.3-litre unit.
The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is priced between Rs 9.97 lakh and Rs 11.37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the diesel variants, and Rs 8.19 lakh and Rs 10.98 (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the petrol trims.
