I have a 2023 Yamaha MT-15 Ver 2.0 that I had purchased on 5th February. It has completed 8,000 km and now I want to upgrade it to another bike with better ride quality and crisp handling. Please suggest.

We'd recommend you choose between the 350cc Triumph Speed 400 and Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, if you have a budget that stretches in the ballpark of Rs 3 lakh. Both the Speed and Guerrilla are good upgrades but have very different riding experiences so a test ride is in order to see which one you gravitate towards. The Speed is lighter, nimbler and has the more polished, refined experience overall. Meanwhile, the Guerrilla is our ranks quite high in terms of bang for buck in the affordable performance game. Its torquey 452cc motor makes for effortless brisk riding and its chassis is well-suited to riding in a sporty fashion when the road turns squiggly. If you instead want a more cost-effective option, look at the KTM 250 Duke. The quarter-liter Duke is a bike that promises sublime handling, an engine that is reasonably punchy without sacrificing usability or fuel efficiency and a good amount of tech.

Hi, I’m planning to buy a new bike during Dussehra and am confused between the R15 and Xtreme. I really like both R15 and Xtreme and feel that either could be used for touring. However, I’m hesitant about the R15 because I’ve seen reviews mentioning that its light weight can affect highway handling and that it may not be ideal on steep inclines. At the same time, we know the R15 can be taken on tours, whereas I’m not sure whether the Xtreme would be equally suitable for touring. We also know that Splendor is reliable. I had also shortlisted the XMR 210 and really liked it, but it is out of production. So, should I go for the R15 or Xtreme?

In theory, with enough determination and some out-of-the-box thinking, you could take any two-wheeler on a long-distance tour. The Yamaha R15 is a sorted, proven supersport but as a tourer, it will leave you wanting in more than one area. On the other hand, the Hero Xtreme 250R packs in lovely handling with comfy ergos and absorptive suspension which will certainly help you cover longer distances in greater comfort. The Xtreme's larger engine is also punchier and will be less stressed at highway speeds than the R15's. However, as you pointed out, the Hero's reliability has been rather patchy and it seems to be a sporadic issue depending on the unit. If you can go to your nearest Hero dealer and get some assurances about the reliability of the Xtreme as well as a good roadside assistance package then perhaps you should consider it. However, if you aren't convinced look for similar options from KTM 200 Duke or 250 Duke or even the Yamaha MT-15 and XSR155 which will all be sporty, yet comfortable machines that are reliable and can be taken touring without a second thought.

I’m planning to upgrade from an Apache 200 after 9 years. My usage is primarily within Bangalore city, with occasional highway trips. I’m confused between the KTM Duke 250, which seems like an agile city option with good tech, the Scrambler 350X, and the KTM Adventure 350. The Scrambler 350X is my first choice, followed by the KTM Adventure 350. However, I feel I might be wasting the larger engines if I’m mostly riding in heavy city traffic. For my usage, should I stick with the Duke 250, or would it make sense to move to one of the bigger options?

We'd recommend you go with the 350cc Triumph Scrambler 400 X over the other bikes you've shortlisted for two reasons. First, it will offer you a big step up in comfort and performance from your Apache 200. Second, despite using a larger engine, this Triumph bike is a very friendly city bike and won't catch you out with abrupt, overeager power delivery or a heavy clutch. The 350cc KTM 390 Adventure has a very buzzy engine which will make its presence felt at all times and the KTM 250 Duke will feel like a small step up from your Apache 200.

I’m 38 years old and 5'6" tall. I’ve been riding a Honda Shine 125 for about a decade and now want to upgrade to a bigger bike. I really like the Triumph Speed 400, but I’ve heard that its maintenance costs can be high. I’m also considering the Bajaj Dominar 400, Pulsar NS200, and Royal Enfield Classic 350. Please help me choose the right bike based on my requirements. I’m also open to other suggestions. I plan to keep the bike for at least 8 years, so long-term reliability and maintenance costs are important to me.

Since you are going to keep your next purchase for a long time and are coming from a Shine, we'd advise you to consider with the Royal Enfield Classic 350. The Classic is a simple, fuss-free motorcycle which should be easy and inexpensive to maintain. This Royal Enfield bike will also offer you a step up in terms of comfort, features and road presence from your Shine although, expectedly, its fuel efficiency will be lower owing to its larger engine. If you want something sportier, then consider the KTM 250 Duke. The quarter-litre Duke has approachable yet exciting performance and will allow you to grow into it as time passes. This KTM bike has great handling, cool tech like a colour TFT display and bidirectional quickshifter and its zingy engine can also be rather fuel efficient with sensible riding. These are two starkly different machines and depending on your preferences, pick between them. A test ride of both should help you decide which one is right for you.

I am planning to buy a KTM Duke. Initially, I considered the 250 because the 390 feels scary, and I am not ready for that yet. But with the new Duke, I'm confused between the two. Can you help me with this?

The 350cc KTM 390 Duke finds a good middle ground between the 399cc 390 Duke R and the smaller 250 Duke in terms of outright power. Even though it has over 40hp, this engine is rather peaky which means you won't be accessing all of the peak output very often - helpful for a newer rider. In terms of features and electronics too, the 390 Duke is much better equipped compared to the 250 Duke. Overall, the 350cc Duke is a machine that you will be able to enjoy for a longer time as you progress as a rider.
