Kawasaki Z900 expert review

Design and Quality

8

The Kawasaki Z900 carries Kawasaki’s Sugomi design philosophy with a sharp LED headlamp, muscular fuel tank, exposed frame and aggressive streetfighter styling. The design gives it a strong road presence without looking oversized. The split-style tail section and compact rear profile add to its sporty appearance. The build quality reflects Kawasaki’s premium positioning, with good paint quality, solid switchgear and neatly finished components. The 17-litre fuel tank gives the motorcycle a large stance while supporting long-distance riding. The design appeals to riders who want a litre-class streetfighter look with the usability of a middleweight motorcycle.

Position and Comfort

9

The Kawasaki Z900 riding position balances sporty riding and daily usability. The handlebar is wide and slightly raised, keeping the riding posture comfortable during city use. The 820mm seat height makes it accessible for most riders, but the motorcycle’s 212kg kerb weight is noticeable while moving it around at parking speeds. The rider seat offers good space and support, but the firm cushioning becomes noticeable during long rides. The pillion seat is compact and is better suited for shorter trips. The upright riding position works well for daily commuting, weekend rides and highway touring.

Performance and Fuel Economy / Range

8

The Kawasaki Z900 is powered by a 948cc liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder engine producing 125PS at 9,500rpm and 98.6Nm at 7,700rpm. The engine is the biggest highlight of the motorcycle. It delivers smooth power at lower revs and builds strong acceleration as the revs increase. The four-cylinder engine offers a refined power delivery and an exhaust note that enthusiasts value. The 6-speed gearbox works smoothly, and the assist and slipper clutch keeps clutch effort manageable in traffic. Real-world fuel efficiency is around 17-20kmpl, and the 17-litre fuel tank provides a riding range of approximately 290-340km. The engine generates heat in slow-moving traffic, which riders experience during city use.

Ride and Handling

7

The Kawasaki Z900 handling combines stability with agility. The lightweight trellis frame and balanced chassis help the motorcycle change direction easily despite its performance. It remains stable at highway speeds and feels confident while cornering. The 41mm upside-down front fork and horizontal back-link rear suspension provide good control during spirited riding. The suspension setup is firm, so sharp bumps and broken roads are felt clearly. The 300mm dual front discs with four-piston calipers and rear disc brake provide strong braking performance. The motorcycle feels most comfortable on open roads where its engine and chassis can be used properly.

Features and Safety

9

The Kawasaki Z900 features include a colour TFT instrument display, smartphone connectivity through Kawasaki’s Rideology app, full LED lighting, dual-channel ABS, traction control, riding modes and power modes. The electronic package improves safety and allows riders to adjust the motorcycle’s behaviour according to conditions. The motorcycle does not offer features such as cruise control, which some riders expect at this price point. The safety equipment covers the requirements of performance-oriented riders.

Price and Verdict (Overall Rating)

8

The Kawasaki Z900 price is around ₹9 lakh (ex-showroom). It offers a powerful 948cc inline-four engine, premium build quality, strong performance and a balance of daily usability with weekend excitement. The smooth engine, sharp handling and aggressive styling make it one of the most appealing performance motorcycles in its segment. The high running cost, heat in city traffic, firm ride quality and limited pillion comfort are important considerations for buyers. Riders looking for an engaging streetfighter with superbike-like performance and everyday usability will find the Kawasaki Z900 a strong choice.

Questions you may find useful

28w

Should I buy a second-hand sports bike or go for a lower-capacity new sports bike? My budget is around Rs 5 to 6 lakh, and I want an inline engine that produces an amazing sound.

Verified

In your budget of Rs 5 to 6 lakh, there is no brand-new four-cylinder bike available today. Therefore, your only option is to look at the used market. Bikes that should be available in your price range are the Honda CBR650F, Kawasaki Z800 / Z900, and Triumph Street Triple 675.Do bear in mind that you're looking at machines that are nearing 10 years of age - possibly even more - and buying a machine with a documented service history would be advisable, even if it means paying a little bit more, as replacing mechanical or electrical components on these bikes will cost you a pretty penny. Also, none of these bikes are E20 fuel compliant, which is another factor to consider.
